Was searching the American Red Cross video "archives" for something fun to share today and came across this gem. Todd Francisco and I traded some messages recently about blood donations and, I was wrong. The 7% figure I was sharing is outdated data with you... 3%. ONLY 3% of those who are medically eligible to donate blood do. When you consider the minimal time commitment (20ish minutes) that your life-saving blood donation takes, and the huge impact it makes for those in medical need...we need more to push past the fear of needles (it's not that bad) and get to a point where it's just part of your routine to fit it into your schedule (every 56 days) to ensure that those we love and care about are being supplied with the blood and blood products that they rely on to stay alive. You won't Scream when you're poked. I've donated 10+ gallons. I'm not a fan of needles, but I just simply look away and focus on something else, and by that point, we're already off and flowing... It used to just be something I helped out with through work and trying to casually recruit friends and family to donate, but now it's my work. It's been a calling in the works for a while, and I ask of you, seriously. Take a moment to think. What if I needed blood...? What if a member or best friend was in a serious accident or got seriously sick and needed blood transfusions? Does it really need to take knowing someone to push you to that point to make the appointment to help? For me, it was a simple request to backfill an appointment slot for someone that was out sick. "We need more donors for our drive. Can you please help today?" Answer the call... (Do you like scary movies?)
