It's been a while since my last post, as track season kicked off and brought with it a whirlwind of excitement over the past 2.5 weeks. Amidst the chaos, I wanted to take a moment to share a snapshot of our dedicated athletes from earlier this week. Recently, a group of our athletes had the opportunity to travel to LA for a band event, immersing themselves in a unique musical experience. However, their journey back home didn't go as smoothly as planned. Facing a six-hour plane delay and a broken-down bus on the road back from Minneapolis to Fargo, they found themselves arriving home nearly eight hours later than expected. Yet, despite these unforeseen challenges, did it deter them from their training routine? Not at all. Our resilient distance runners took matters into their own hands and completed a 5k around LAX, ensuring they stayed on track with their mileage for the day. They could have easily let the circumstances dictate their actions, but instead, they chose determination and adaptability, keeping their eyes fixed on their ultimate goal for May. This remarkable display of resilience speaks volumes about the character of our athletes, but it also reflects the invaluable guidance of our distance coaches Jared Slinde and Troy Thorson. It's through their mentorship and dedication that such a strong work ethic has been instilled in our team. This experience holds valuable lessons for all of us, both personally and professionally. Life doesn't always unfold according to plan, presenting us with inconvenient obstacles along the way. However, it's how we respond to these challenges that ultimately shapes our success. Just as our athletes persevere through adversity to achieve their goals, so too must we remain resilient and focused on our objectives, even when the path ahead seems daunting. Let's remember that it's the determination to push through the tough times that paves the way for future triumphs. Run your own race. I was nervous, intimidated and overwhelmed as I awaited the start of a 10-mile road race last week. There was so much I failed to do… ❌ Failed to complete my training schedule ❌ Failed to run outside to simulate realistic terrain and heat conditions ❌ Failed to sleep well the night before ❌ Failed to rest the day of the race ❌ Failed to lose the weight I had hoped to help make running feel easier The race took place in 90-degree weather. One of the hottest days of the year. I seriously considered walking many times…who would even know if I did?! I felt so underprepared, so out of shape, so disappointed in myself. But, I knew I had to do what I tell my kids every day… “Do your best” “It’s not about winning, it’s about giving 💯” “Don’t worry about other people - focus on yourself” I ran SLOOOOOOW. So many people passed me by, including people I know are moms with careers and young kids…I kept asking myself ‘how can they do this so effortlessly and why is this such a struggle for me?’ I didn’t use any kind of watch or timer - I didn’t want to worry about pace - just about tackling each mile one at a time and crossing that finish line. And, somehow, I found the strength to run all 10 miles. Every step. And finished strong. I know through my actions I am showing my kids that it’s okay to be scared. And that it’s possible to have courage even when you are scared. It’s so easy to get sucked into comparing ourselves. To get caught up in what we don’t have. What we could have done more of to get to this point. Last weekend, I had the privilege to participate in Jimmy Lewis' Off-Road Riding class outside of Pahrump, NV. As a novice dirt bike rider, I had a steep learning curve. Admittedly, I reached my limit on day 2 but I nevertheless enjoyed the experience to the fullest. Jimmy is a true legend and his team is amazing. Here are my key takeaways: (1) Give yourself the opportunity to learn from the best. (2) Don’t allow limiting beliefs to hold you back from achieving your goals. (3) Trust your increments: Small, consistent steps can lead to significant success. (4) Have fun, remain curious and stay engaged in order to maximize your learning experience. (5) Don’t take yourself too seriously. Find the humor in the situation, and your mindset will change. (6) If you fall, get back up. If you stumble, re-gain your balance. Never give up.
