I love the thrill of competition – it motivates me to put forth my best. And when it comes to reflecting on competition and winning, there is no better place to be than Indianapolis in May. On the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, hundreds of thousands of fans from around the globe will pack the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the annual running of the Indianapolis 500. As I look forward to taking in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” for the first time as an Indiana resident, I'm reflecting on the parallels between our teams at Roche and the 33 racing teams that assemble each year for a chance to make history and what lessons we can learn. Competition Makes Us Better. It inspires us to innovate for patients and customers, continuously raising the bar on what is possible. $GOLF -5.75% $MODG -5.86% - Golf sector stocks are down with the market but also perhaps a part of their slide is due to the new (old) kid on the block. Last night, Tiger Woods' Sun Day Red brand announced that they will be open for business on May 1. In a pre-mkt note, a Stephens & Co. analyst reminded investors that Sun Day Red (part of private co. TaylorMade) will be directly competing with Topgolf's (MODG, the old Callaway) Footjoy apparel brand and Acushnet's ($GOLF) TravisMathew brand. Stephens expects Woods' new brand to be priced in the premium level. Of course, it will take a few quarters to see if Sun Day Red starts to chip away at its peers and recapture Tiger's loyal base from his decades at Nike.
