Meet Paul Ekwueme, Paul is one of the most influential people in my life. He has taught me so much about perseverance, commitment to one's dreams, working hard, and the power of passion. Paul had always dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player from a young age, but had multiple set backs especially going to a small high school of 150 students (if you know the high school sport scene, small schools are often under-looked by scouts and get little to no attention). Apart from the fact Paul struggled to get any soccer university offers, he also suffered from Osgood schlatter disease (severe knee pain) in which many physios recommended Paul to stop playing sports intensely. I remember during the COVID pandemic, Paul was training consistently every morning at 6am, and some nights up until 11pm to stay fit, as well as hours of stretches to prevent further injury to his knee. He also combined this with being diligent with his studies in high school, winning the award of salutatorian upon graduation, and getting into the top business schools in the country (UofT, McMaster, and York). Paul's intense training eventually got him a spot on Hamilton United Youth Academy and then he chose to go to McMaster for his studies (without a spot on the soccer team), having faith that he would eventually work his way up to the team as they were the best in the nation at the time (2021-2022). Paul worked immensely hard at the academy, combined with his studies. He eventually got called up for a training session with McMaster, got into the team as a training player for a year, and then got into the first team in his second year of studies. At age 19, Paul is the starting Defensive Midfielder for McMaster's Men Soccer and Semi-Pro side Alliance United. He also happens to be working for Subaru as a Jr. Financial Analyst Intern, and also happens to be my younger brother. I learnt from Paul, don't let anyone tell you what you can or can't do. At the same time, don't put all your eggs in one basket! It’s Not Where You Start 🏈 Meet Matt Ganyard, the University of Virginia’s 34-year-old kicker. [Disclaimer: As a misfiring 33-year-old, my knees hurt just writing this. 🤣] Ganyard first graduated from UVA in 2011, having never played a down of college football. Like ever. Not even flag football intramurals. 🚩 Ganyard did tryout for the football team twice in undergrad, however, but was turned away both times. “I still have the email from 2009, saying I didn’t make the team,” Ganyard said. After graduating, he turned his attention to the Marine Corps, following in his father’s footsteps. ⏩ Fast forward to present-day, after a decade in the military, Matt is now back on campus as a graduate student pursuing his MBA. With only one year of eligibility remaining, Matt decided to give it another try… And was named UVA’s starter on kickoffs coming out of fall camp this year. 👟🏈 ***************** 🔑 Key Takeaways You’re not too old.
