Message to Recruiters: Learn about the field you're recruiting for and take at least 'some' time looking at the person's profile/resume before calling/shooting off a message. I've gotten A LOT of In-Mail messages this last week looking for HVAC or construction work, generally with one of the following: "we think you'd be a great fit!" "I was really impressed with your profile!" Here's the thing . . . I have 0 experience in HVAC or construction! It's nowhere on my profile, I don't list anything close as a skill, and my job summaries don't match construction work. I have to assume this is because they're searching for licensed Professional Engineers, but that is not exclusive to that type of work. Why am I annoyed? Because the job description is often vague enough I have to do the leg work into the company before I figure it out. If I don't, I'm just wasting everyone's time or passing up a potential job opportunity. Why should you care? Because you if you tell me I'm a great fit for a job I don't remotely qualify for, I'm not going to take you seriously if you have other jobs that you think I might fit for and I'm not recommending someone to you. I know it's hard, but do the work!

Why do you need to hire a professional to supervise your project? 1) A qualified person will have the necessary experience and expertise to carry out your work in an economical and efficient way 2) Many issues arise from lack of quality control. A supervision team/person makes sure that no corners are cut and that all specifications are met. He/She will ensure that all workmanship, all material and all techniques used meet the standards that are accepted within the market or that they are exceeded 3) Coordination of the many project components is one of the key determinants of a project's success. A qualified supervisor will have the skills of project management and will help schedule, budget, manage procuring and also supervise sub contractors 4) This professional should also help you be up to date with the various regulatory compliances. This will help avoid delays, costly fines and project shutdowns. 5) Many challenges are experienced by the fundi's team during construction. Your professional will prove his worth during such times 6) Communication is key especially for middle to large sized projects. There needs to be structured relay of information, otherwise many miscommunications occur leading to wrong implementation which may be costly to rectify 7) If you want accountability, you need to give someone a specific responsibility. Always be wise! A great project is a combination of the many decisions that you make

The contractors that scale the fastest (and become the largest) hire people to "own" specific responsibilities and processes in the building cycle- not an entire project. You're probably thinking: "Yeah, no sh*t Isaac". But you'd be amazed at how many 10-15 year companies I talk to that have hit a ceiling for this very reason. They continue to assign the outcome of an entire project to a single person, rather than create roles that segment ownership of the processes required for a project to be successful. I.e.. Project Coordinator, Project Manager / Field Engineer, Super It's often owners that came up through a trade to start their own business that have a hard time making the shift, but this phenomenon doesn't discriminate. If you're a small/midsize contractor that knows you need to shift your management structure but aren't sure how to do it, give me a shout. I love this stuff, and would be happy to connect you with some people much smarter than myself that can help transform your company. . . . #hiring #construction #recruiting #scaling

RESOLUTIONS OR MINDSET? As we head toward the end of January, how many of you have already forgotten that you even set a “resolution” for 2024? I understand if you have, January can be one of the toughest months of the year to navigate, from dark nights, freezing temperatures to waiting for that much needed wage at the end of the month. It can be a challenge just to stay focused and positive. One thing I’ve learnt over the years, is that whilst you might not be able to control the things that happen around you, you can control how you face them, you can control your choices and ultimately control how you act. It’s easy to find reasons why you can’t do something, but it’s so much more satisfying when you find a way to make things happen. It takes a bit more time and thought but when you’ve got the desire and have an open mindset the opportunities for growth are endless!! I’m extremely lucky that our Midlands’ team have that exact mentality. In a market that some would describe as tough, we are extremely busy and have a wide variety of opportunities available across all our main sectors (Build, Civils, Residential, M&E & FM). These include: · Contracts Manager (Build / Civils / Residential) · Senior Project Manager (Build / M&E) · Project Manager (Build / Civils / M&E) · Senior MEP Manager (M&E) · Design Manager (Build / M&E) · Electrical Buyer (M&E) · Site Engineers (Build / Civils) · Works Manager (Civils) · General Foreman (Civils) · Estimator (Civils / Build / FM) · Electrical Maintenance Engineer (FM) · Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer (FM) In addition to us recruiting heavily for our clients, we are expanding our own teams in Stafford & Birmingham. Whether you are looking for a new challenge or are an experienced recruiter… if you want a role with a company that not only puts your career first but is set in a fantastic work environment, then please get in touch with me for a chat. Former non-profit Leader | Scrum Master | Experienced in Project Coordination, Team Leadership, Event Planning, and Process Improvement | Passionate about People/Relationships and Driving Success
“We are suspending all business operations while assessments are made.” That was the text we got Friday. Translation: “Sorry, you’re out of a job.” Typically, there’s more job security in this industry. Everybody needs a plumber or an hvac tech… But companies still go out of business. So I suddenly find myself very actively job seeking. For those that don’t know, I’ve been slowly pursuing a career change over the last year. Right now I’m an HVAC technician, but my plan is to break into tech. So far I’ve landed a total of zero interviews. It’s likely that I will have to find another HVAC position for now, as I’ll be able to do that fairly quickly, and I can’t afford to be out of work for long. But on the one-in-a-million chance that someone would see this and give me a shot, I’m putting this out there: I have several years of leadership experience in a non-profit setting, as well as my scrum master certification, and I would love to find a project manager role. If you’re looking for someone who is a passionate learner and who is willing to work harder than anyone else to prove they have what it takes to make it in a new field, I would love to connect with you. If not, I’ll see you later this year when I have some more training and certifications done. Either way, I’m coming for that tech job in 2024. 💪🏻 #opentowork #techcareers
