Being surrounded at Cannes by friends, peers, and mentors reminded me why I took this incredibly challenging job -- I want to build a more private internet for everyone. I'm doing this not just for consumers but also all the businesses on the open internet that depend on advertising today and will benefit from a more sustainable approach. I spent most of my career outside Google, competing with it in independent ad tech. Then I spent two very formative years of my career at Meta where I saw first hand how fast moving regulation and abrupt platform changes can have unintended impacts to consumers and businesses. It's very hard for anyone to get every tradeoff perfect. It's been good having honest convos in Cannes and other forums how others think about the tradeoffs across stakeholders. I do believe self-regulation and guidance by knowledgeable ad tech leaders preserves utility better for the industry and delivers privacy sooner for the consumer. That's what brought me here to Privacy Sandbox, and I hope others in industry join me in building a more private internet.

Thanks for the dinner in Cannes and looking forward to the next steps with the privacy sandbox! There is no future for the open web without real privacy so keep it up!

Victor Wong - There are a lot of people (like me) who disagree with the way that you’re going about enforcing a "private internet". Questions raised include; 1️⃣ Google and Apple (GApple) knowing everything about everyone without people having any choice doesn’t improve anyone’s privacy. How does GPS result in a more private internet for everyone? GPS doesn’t prevent GApple capturing unfair consent for multiple services in one prompt. GPS doesn’t provide verifiable audit over GApple’s data usage. 2️⃣ Privacy is important, but so is competition. Degrading the interoperability that the independent, open web relies on to compete, harms the internet. Have the “honest convos” raised the idea of GPS competing on the merits whilst guaranteeing interoperability? 3️⃣ Privacy is a non-price factor of competition. It’s for each business to decide how to offer it, and how to comply with laws. Why do you feel you have the right to expeditiously force GApple’s definition of privacy on the eco-system?   I’m doing my bit to build a private web at Movement for an Open Web. Many privacy solutions can be advanced competing on their merits when competition is working. ⬇ https://movementforanopenweb.com/mows-mission-opening-the-web-for-everyone/

Can’t wait to spend more time figuring out privacy sandbox for the entire industry and to help save the open Internet for publishers, I know that is a very big goal, :-)

Great meeting you this week, Victor.
