As a QA contractor myself I have seen this kind of "Restructuring" happen outside of the games industry and have been affected by it. I used to think the contract work gig was pretty neat. It was great having the comfort of TEKsystems at my back where one contract ends, another begins. Being able to experience different industries and different QA teams was really fun. Now I'm struggling to find any work, and my recruiters are struggling to find me QA work. Every week, sometimes daily I fight the mental struggle of "What is wrong with me?" "Why am I not good enough?" I have to take a step back, disconnect from the computer for a while, and come back refreshed. Most of the time I come back with a cup of coffee in my hands. I sit, make a game plan for how I'm going to look for work, and then do something to push my technical knowledge/experience further. I see a lot of posts on LinkedIn for contract positions. I apply for many of them. Usually end up getting a rejection letter or seeing that the "Job is no longer available" a few days later. Is contract work dying? Are companies not seeing value in having a contract worker vs a regular worker? It seems like the landscape is changing a bit.

As bad as it's been for game dev, it's been much worse for QA. From the Wired story linked below: "Of those layoffs, it was quality assurance workers who seemed to have been most impacted; 22 percent of QA workers said they’d been laid off in the last year. Only 7 percent of developers overall reported losing their jobs." And it's probably even worse than even those numbers with the larger percentage of QA being contract vs full time and not being "laid off" just having their contracts cancelled/ended. Gabriel Tissot-Ritchot is right, there are other great opportunities for QA outside game dev with lots of other benefits. It can feel like you're losing your dream having to leave game dev (trust me, I know, I did it last year), however there are amazing products, teams, challenges, and opportunities that can be very fulfilling outside of games. https://lnkd.in/gSv9bewd

Your app's up and running, a spark in your eye. Your team gave it a test in the office, and gave you the thumbs up. But you missed something crucial - the real world. What happens when your app is in the wild without WiFi? Can it hold its own? What happens when your user receives a phone call? Does it save their information for when they return to the app? This is why you need the sharp minds of mobile-first QA experts, skilled in the mobile realm, to put your app through the tests. There come times in your career when you must bring in the big guns - a specialized team, a safety net. Ones who specialize in the realm. Don't pinch pennies when it comes to hiring experts. Your app users will be grateful, I promise.

Afternoon everyone! We're still on the hunt for a hands on QA leader to help us launch our first cloud game. This is the perfect opportunity for somebody who wants to help build something from the ground up, and doesn't mind rolling up their sleeves and doing some of the work themselves. If you're interested read on for a "Cheat Sheet" on the types of things we are looking for in an ideal candidate Key skills we are looking for... * Experienced being deeply embedded with a game development team, especially at the early 0 to 1 stages of making a game. This is a role where you will be shoulder to shoulder working in the trenches with developers. We want people that invested in the project, and capable of building strong collaborative relationships. * Technically capable of navigating your way around game development tools with strong familiarity with game engines (Unity is ideal), developer workflows / tools, build processes, etc. We're a small team so we're counting on you to be able to do forensic investigation and help us find the root cause of issues. * Knows their way around QA process & workflows. Our first QA lead will work with production to set up our QA reporting process including but not limited to; Bug workflows, JIRA setup & management, Test plan processes, Smoke & build testing, etc... * Comfortable with leading a small team (eventually). We fully expect to need to bring additional folks online for the project. But it will never be a massive team everyone on our team is a working manager. So we're looking for folks that are capable of managing a few high functioning individuals or a solid external outsource partner. Still reading?! You've spent your time in the trenches of smaller startup teams or medium sized game teams. You didn't have an army of testers, or all the fancy toys.. and you didn't need it b/c you and your crew were basically the QA version of Seal Team 6 * A grizzled veteran of many a game launch.. You've been there done that, and have the tradeshow T-shirts to prove it. Day to day you manage a large crew of amazing QA folks, but secretly you wish you can go back to the glory days and roll up your sleeves and get your hands deep in the guts of a game again.

Hello, fellow game dev jobseekers. Yesterday I was approached by a person impersonating a legitimate company via the LinkedIn Job Board. The company in question was a headhunting firm that had no prior listings for game jobs, so I believe this scam to be targetted at all the people recently laid off in the game industry. The email itself was fairly convincing, with a list of responsibilities fitting for the job I had applied to, but they had various discrepancies; namely their TLD (.com, org, etc) was different to the ones on their website. I was not harmed financially or otherwise, as I caught on fairly quickly, but I thought this would be a good time to say the following: Please be careful when signing up, and remember: if it sounds too good to be true, do some research. Make sure they aren't impersonating legitimate conpanies. If they are, be sure to forward the offending domains to their legal department so that action can be taken.
