Day 6 (yesterday) of #100DaysofPlay - I rewatched one of my favourite TED talks by Jane McGonigal. She talks about a game she created called “Jane the Concussion Slayer” and is known for her role as Director of Game Research and Development at the Institute for the Future. Jane investigated the reasons why games seem to have an increasing pull on us. “We're up to 3 billion hours playing online games a week,” she says in her 2012 TED talk. Jane realised that compared to games, reality feels broken: it doesn't engage us or motivate us or inspire us or connect us as effectively and reliably as our best games do. She says, games offer us “intense, optimistic engagement with the world around us,” and they are defined by four essential traits: ✨a goal, ✨rules, ✨a feedback system, and ✨voluntary participation I love this taking these fundamental elements of game design and thinking about how I can apply them better in my work or life more broadly 🤸♀️ #play #gaming #powerofplay #goals #rules #feedback #options #engagement #challenge #optimism

IGN Italy published my review of #Disgaea7VowsoftheVirtueless, the return of the classic strategic JRPG series #Disgaea developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published in the West by NIS America, Inc.. "Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless" presents a solid addition to the beloved Nippon Ichi Software franchise. Set in a new demon dimension inspired by feudal Japan, the game's engaging characters like Fuji, Ao, and Pirilika add charm to the familiar tactical RPG formula. While it doesn't revolutionize the series, it maintains its core gameplay with grid-based battles and introduces new mechanics like Hell mode and Jumbofication, bringing refreshing elements to the mix. The game excels in character and unit customization, offering a vast array of classes, passive abilities, and item enhancement through the Item World system. Despite its technical limitations and similarities to previous entries, this seventh installment combines the series' strengths while introducing some differentiating features. IGN Italy published my review of #Crymachina on their website. "Crymachina" attempts to blend existentialist themes with sci-fi concepts, resembling "Nier: Automata." As Leben, a teenager resurrected in a digital world, you unravel a mysterious narrative. The game combines lengthy dialogues with action-packed levels. However, the combat feels inconsistent, often forcing long-range attacks due to erratic enemy actions. The story segments frequently interrupt the fast-paced combat, contributing to repetitiveness. Despite good storytelling and artistic direction, it's not a recommended action game. "Crymachina" prioritizes narrative over gameplay. It shines in artistry and storytelling, but not as an engaging hack-and-slash title. #critic #videogames #videogameindustry #videogamecritic #press
