Much of the return in the US equity markets came from Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Amazon and Alphabet in the first 6 months of 2023. Those five stocks now represent over 20% of the total market capitalization of US equity markets. Contrast that with non-US equity markets where returns were much more broad based, with Samsung, TSMC, ASML, LVMH and Novo Nordisk responsible for a far lower percentage of index returns. Those five foreign stocks also represent far less than 10% of the capitalization of non-US markets. #internationalinvesting #indexconcentration #hardingloevner #diversification

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐈𝐬 𝐚 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬? Reverse engineering a stock's current market price provides priceless insights that are an excellent addition to conventional valuation techniques. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭: 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 The main objective of traditional valuation techniques is to estimate future earnings and cash flows and then discount them to their present value. This strategy has been successful in the past, but it's not the whole picture. A stock's current market value can be used as a reliable indicator of investor sentiment and expectations for the company's future. 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 Even if the market price represents an average of the opinions and judgments of many investors, it is by no means perfect. Stocks have the potential to both exceed and fall short of market expectations. Investors are faced with a difficult situation in which they must decide how much faith to place in their valuations relative to what the market says. 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 Although a lucrative business is desirable, investors should carefully consider how profits can eventually fall to the point where they merely cover operational costs. The durability of the company's competitive edge is closely correlated with this rate. Others include #Nokia and #BlackBerry. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Companies that successfully use money to promote expansion frequently enjoy higher stock values. In essence, investors pay a higher price for a higher-quality and more reliable investment. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 The present market price of a stock can be reverse-engineered to provide a useful lens through which to examine its valuation.
