Fascinating Greater Lincolnshire LEP conference and Keynote by Dr Paul Redmond ‘The workforce of the future’. For me, a much welcomed upgrade and update on research around what it takes for today’s managers to engage today’s employee. Research showing that for the first time (because people are living longer and retiring later) Four generations are working together. 😮 Four generations all with different experiences of the world and different expectations of work, environment and managing/ being managed. Todays managers needing to combine EQ and exceptional communication skills (we know about that bit) and the new ‘DQ’. DQ - the digital readiness of individuals - their ability to understand manage and use it - so enabling scalability, and connection and collaboration with colleagues. This felt like useful research New requirements of managers and their competencies - competencies wanted (and somewhat expected) by new employees entering the workplace. Also the new truth that we have four generations of people working together - two of those generations being 'digital imigrants' - generations where digital wasnt around when they were born. Fascinating.

See my thoughts on how new developments in technology can make transparency either a landmine or a goldmine for elevating workforce trust in a new article published by Worklife. The idea of a tailored approach within a total reward concept is gaining traction and becoming increasingly relevant for organizations to attract, retain and motivate staff. In the wake of the pandemic, many countries experienced a shift in the employer-employee power relationship as evidenced by the ‘great resignation’ and the rise of ‘soft living’, signaling that the workforce (especially the Millennial and Gen Z component) is recognizing that work needs to better fit their lives. In a white paper titled ‘The Omniployment Era’ by the World of Work Institute of Henley Business School, the authors warn that the workforce is still in motion, and the days of a one-size-fits-all approach to employees are over. What I found most interesting is the segmentation of the workforce in 6 types, each one with it’s own green flags, red flags and tipping points i.e. – things that would cause them to leave a job. The paper argues, with evidence, that employees should not be viewed as a homogenous mass but employers must pay attention to the motivations of each employee segment. This requires that: 1. Businesses embrace a culture where work and reward look different for different employees. 2. Work is as flexible as possible for those who want it 3. Businesses are transparent – being open and honest about plans and how its leaders respond to adversity is key to making staff feel like they work for a company that cares. I hope you find this as insightful as I did. https://lnkd.in/d3iFTS6g
