How to time subtitles for sign languages? A nice challenge posted by Subtle. Let's consider this example. CODA is primarily aimed at English-speaking audiences, for whom #AmericanSignLanguage is a #foreignlanguage, so they'll need subtitles to understand it. These subtitles are provided at the production stage - by an ASL into English translator in this case. The timings of these subtitles can be used for the translation into any other language. Now, if we're part of the production team to provide these diegetic subtitles, we'll follow the visuals. We can't expect the subtitle to be as frame accurate as with spoken languages, because sound has a more precise onset than movement. In other words, human gestures like those in ASL, involve physical motion that is inherently smoother and takes time to unfold. Starting and stopping points of movements are not as sharply defined as sound onsets and offsets, making it harder to pinpoint an exact frame for the beginning or end of a movement. But that's totally OK as long as the subtitles coincide and follow the rest of the specs, like characters per second, maximum characters per line and minimum-maximum duration.

Praise for multilingual TV 📺 and film 🎥. So often in the past different languages in English-language TV and film would be expressed using accents (think 'Allo 'Allo! 🥖). However, with shows such as Acapulco and and films such as Steven Spielberg's 2021 rendition of the classic musical West Side Story 💃, we are seeing an increase in original-language dialogue – something to be celebrated. 👉 This article goes through some of the latest (US-produced) TV shows that have opted to go for the authentic and have non-English-speaking characters speak in their original language rather than in some 'fake, over-the-top accent' https://lnkd.in/e2dtrzPx. But is this a recent phenomenon? Well, it seems to depend on the country. English-dominant countries such as the USA 🇺🇸 and UK 🇬🇧 have traditionally been reluctant to show true linguistic diversity on the screen. However, thanks to the introduction of widespread subtitling by multicultural broadcaster SBS in the 1980s, Australia 🇦🇺 has had some multilingual TV over the years, albeit patchy. One of the earliest examples was the 1987 youth drama mini-series In Between. Coming at a time when more famous (and notoriously diversity-lacking) Aussie soaps Neighbours and Home and Away started, In Between provided a more realistic portrayal of the lives of young people, mainly from non-English-speaking backgrounds, in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. The dialogue was genuine featuring much code-switching between contemporary colloquial Australian English and the mother tongues of the four main protagonists, Turkish, Macedonian and Cambodian. Likewise, when I was first exposed as a child to the anthology of Yugoslav WWII partisan films, it was at first a revelation to me that the characters playing the Nazis would usually speak in German and not in some German-accented Serbo-Croatian. 💡 Showing true linguistic diversity on TV screens provides greater authenticity and, therefore, content that is more relatable to the TV audience. And the hilarity ensues when we translate this phrase into other languages! Imagine explaining to a non-English speaker that they've got their "knickers in a twist." They might start checking their attire in confusion, wondering if a wardrobe malfunction is causing their distress. The charm of "knickers in a twist" isn't in its literal meaning but in its vivid imagery. It paints a picture of someone so flustered that even their undergarments are in disarray. However, without the cultural context, this idiom could cause more twists and turns than a roller coaster ride.
