Today is World Water Day💧 Every year, the 22nd March is dedicated to raising awareness of the threats facing our waters and the importance of having a global approach to protecting them. As a scuba diver, the underwater world is my safe space, a place where I, like many, find calm and peace in the weightlessness. Diving feels like entering another world, a place which so many other creatures call home and in order to protect them, and our sport we have to protect our waters. But water’s peace goes far beyond that. Not only does water bring divers together, it can bring countries together too, hence this year’s theme - “Water for Peace”. We must keep our waters clean, look after our marine life and ensure that everyone has access to water no matter where they are in the world. At the core of our mission lies the conservation of our marine environment and the sustainable management of our coastal resources, as well as the gathering of critical data. 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁. If you've ever spent time around a Massachusetts lake, pond or a bay in the Spring, you may have witnessed these small, black and white diving ducks. This species of duck, the Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) are very small (Length: 12.6-15.8 in), compact ducks with large, rounded heads and short, wide bills. This one seen in the photograph diving underwater was spotted at Lake Cochichewick, Weir Hill in North Andover. Adult male Bufflehead have a white body, black back, and a dark head with a large white patch that wraps around the back of the head. Females and first-year males are gray-brown overall with an oval, white cheek patch. Bufflehead dive underwater to catch aquatic invertebrates. When courting females, male Buffleheads swim in front of them, rapidly bobbing their heads up and down. Bufflehead are most widespread in migration and winter, when they move south to coasts and large bodies of water, particularly shallow saltwater bays. They breed near lakes in northern forests where conifers mix with poplars or aspens. Here is an excellent article in which Latvian divers describe the first time ghost or abandoned fishing nets have been removed from the cold, dark Baltic Sea. They are concentrating on wreck diving at present - because that is where the nets get tangled. In certain cases, when a ship is docked or anchored, and there’s a need to assess its hull or underwater components, marine surveyors equipped with diving certifications and appropriate gear will dive into the water to conduct inspections. These “underwater surveyors” brave the depths to examine the ship’s condition, check for damages, and ensure that everything is in order.
