🚨News in Workplace Safety! 🚨 The U.S. Department of Labor has just announced a pivotal move to enhance the safety and health protections for emergency responders. This major development, set to be proposed in January 2024, aims to modernize the outdated "Fire Brigades" standard from the 1980s. 🔥 What's Changing? 🔥 The proposal will update existing standards to cover a broader range of emergency workers including firefighters, EMS providers, and search & rescue teams. It's a shift from a patchwork of old standards to a comprehensive "Emergency Response" standard. Major improvements in protective clothing, equipment, and safety practices in line with current industry standards. 🩺 Health Focus: Employers will be required to conduct baseline medical screenings and ongoing medical surveillance for responders, especially those frequently exposed to fire byproducts. Did you know businesses can be fined if they don't report notifiable incidents? 🤔 In 2022, a Qld business was fined $5,000 plus $1,100 in costs after pleading guilty to failing to report a notifiable incident and breaching Section 38 of the Queensland WHS Act. All businesses must notify Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) of incidents classed as 'notifiable'. A notifiable incident is defined as a fatality, serious injury or illness, or a dangerous incident that occurs in the workplace. A serious injury or illness includes immediate treatment as an inpatient in a hospital and immediate treatment for serious injuries that can involve the spine, head, burns, the eyes, hearing, internal organs, amputation and severe cuts. If a notifiable incident occurs in your business, you must: ➡️ Report it to the regulator immediately, ➡️ Preserve the incident site until an inspector arrives or directs otherwise, ➡️ Provide first aid and support to the injured person, ➡️ Seek to mitigate risk of others accessing the site and make the site safe, and ➡️ Call 000 if there is an immediate risk to life.
