Mental Health is Health.🙌 Thanks to Governor Hochul and state legislators' historic investment, we're expanding mental health care support for our students. From additional staff to telehealth care, students will have more access to critical supports. "We are making critical investments to ensure every New Yorker has access to high-quality mental health services,” Governor Hochul said. “College can be a stressful and overwhelming time, and this funding will expand mental health services on college campuses so students can focus on just being students." Chancellor King added, "Mental health is health, and as more students seek mental health care, we need to be there for them with expanded services, including having enough counselors on campus or online 24-7. SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. visited SUNY Oswego and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, emphasizing the impact of this investment. 🤝🌐 At SUNY Oswego, funds will be used to hire specialized staff, initiate #TeleCounseling contracts, extend counselor contracts for summer services, and increase pay for per diem staff. Meanwhile, SUNY ESF will utilize the funding to hire additional staff, host a Mental Health Symposium, and launch a #PeerAmbassador program. Making mental health central to everything we do is a priority at Dartmouth. Today, we're taking another step toward this pledge by launching Commitment to Care: Dartmouth's Strategic Plan for Student Mental Health and Well-Being, which addresses all—graduate, professional, and undergraduate—student mental health. The plan clarifies our vision, defines goals and strategies, and commits to specific and immediate actions as well as long-term initiatives. The five strategic goals of Commitment to Care are: 1. To center well-being in all we do, both inside and outside of the classroom 2. To create an inclusive community to foster mental health and well-being for students with diverse lived experiences 3. To equip students with the resources and skills to navigate both success and failure with strength and confidence 4. To proactively work with those experiencing mental illness to aid students in reaching their goals. 5. "Loneliness researcher Laurie Theeke, associate dean for George Washington University’s Ph.D. in nursing program, said universities should be careful not to confuse social isolation with loneliness. Modern research differentiates between social isolation, which, she said, refers to a lack of day-to-day interaction with other people, whereas loneliness refers to the psychological state of feeling like one’s need for love and belonging is not being met. Most colleges aim to solve the problem of social isolation without addressing the underlying loneliness—which is an extremely personalized struggle that can usually only be addressed by the person in question, Theeke said. But colleges can support that work by helping students connect with others who are experiencing similar emotions and minimizing the negative connotations of loneliness. “There’s a stigma associated with loneliness, and it’s this stigma of social undesirability,” she said. “Instead of taking on the challenge of loneliness, they actually self-isolate.” By reducing the stigma and “making sure students on the campus know belonging is a goal for the university,” she said, colleges may be able to play a more significant role in ending the loneliness epidemic." #HigherEducation #HigherEd

Middle-aged and senior citizens in adult education have a 19% reduced chance of developing the condition within five years, a new study suggests. The findings also suggest that people who took the classes kept up their fluid intelligence – the ability to reason quickly and to think abstractly – and non-verbal reasoning performance better than peers who did not. New Post: Education secretary talks student seclusion, trauma and support DENVER (KDVR) — Three separate investigations are underway following allegations that a Denver middle school locked students alone inside a so-called seclusion room. The reports made it to the country’s top education official. U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona told “Colorado Point of View” this week that these types of rooms should not be used. Colorado Point of View: What AG Weiser is doing to help the teen mental health crisis “Look, we shouldn’t be having as a strategy a place where a student who’s in trauma is locked in a room alone and possibly harming themselves or destroying the room. We have to have layers of intervention and that requires support,” Cardona said. Denver Public Schools does not allow students to be locked in a room, hence the investigations surrounding the reports at McAuliffe International School. Cardona also highlighted the lingering impacts of the pandemic. “The fact that there’s been an increase in trauma, the fact that we have student-counselor ratios of 500-to-1, and that in many schools, they may not even have a social worker or have someone to help,” Cardona said. 👩🏿⚕As an educational psychologist, I often find myself delving into the complexities of student well-being, and one critical aspect that demands our attention is the phenomenon of emotional-based school avoidance. Emotionally-based school avoidance (EBSA) is a term used to describe reduced or non-attendance at school by a child or young person due to emotional, mental health, or wellbeing issues.  📚According to the Children’s Commissioner’s 2022 Attendance Audit, 1 in 4 children were persistently absent in Autumn 20211. This figure has more than doubled since 2018/2019, where it was 1 in 9. I have certainly seen in an increase within my caseload. I do not believe that it is a coincidence that we have seen this increases since the COVID-19 pandemic It is likely that it has contributed to this trend Some young people adopt it as a maladaptive coping mechanism. 😧School can be a tough emotional space for many young people, the school environment is not solely an academic arena; it's a social, emotional, and sometimes overwhelming landscape. Emotional-based school avoidance is often a reflection of a struggle to navigate complex social dynamics, academic pressures, or personal challenges. 🧠A collaborative effort is required to address EBSA, as is encouraging open dialogue by creating safe spaces for young people to express their feelings, which in turn will empower them to voice their concerns and fears. Acknowledging their emotions validates their experiences, fostering trust and a sense of understanding that is fundamental to emotional well-being. ❓Have you heard of EBSA before ?
