Occasional inventor & applied epistemologist 😎 Imagining fascinating things and working to make them real
#interesting #insights from a key #AI player. Use #LLM as black boxes; and build on top of them with REST #API s ☘️ “Folks, I left Meta yesterday. This time there were no layoffs or anything thrilling involved. In fact, I am more bullish than ever about Meta with the company’s increased focus on AI. But given the incredible competitive pressure in the field, there is really no advantage to be inside a large corp if you want to build cool stuff on top of LLMs. My current plan is to keep an empty calendar and mess around doing independent research and see where it leads. I want to build stuff on top, using LLMs as a black box. All I need for that is a REST api to one of the big corp's models, or run a local one on my own laptop. It is exactly like you do not need to build your own chips to create interesting software. LLMs are the new ISAs.” https://lnkd.in/eyT4UZs6 #artificialintelligence

During my (too short) couple years at #Meta before returning to #Google, I was really impressed by Meta engineering culture centred around Tribes/virtual teams, high IC autonomy, and a bias toward failing fast. I’m supporting a culture change effort that would benefit from learning more. Can anyone point me to material I can share about #Meta #Eng culture? (Edit: thanks everyone for the DMs with pointers to articles!)

I was already on my way to the store to get VisionPro. But I didn't buy it. Why? I read and watched a lot of opinions and reviews. I participated in a Spaces discussion on Twitter. I read one of the best reviews made by Stratechery I listened to people who recommended this device. I talked to people who experience headaches and eye strain to get used to it. People who are now a bit happier because they can work on the beach. I'm not judging that. Today, I read a tweet from a colleague who put on VisionPro and said that Meta has nothing to worry about. She convinced me to enter VR and start my adventure with Meta Quest 3. So, I decided to hop on the journey. My focus is productivity, not entertainment. I am not watching many movies. I occasionally play games. I'm crazy about Apple. I planned to include VisionPro in my work set. But I'm starting with a different platform. I don't like that Vision Pro doesn't let you share the device with family members or coworkers. I think the battery with cable is an early 90s solution, and I know Apple will significantly improve the device over the next 12 months. Then I will be ready for a switch (I hope my eyes and head too). So, I am starting with Meta Quest. I'm studying the device and am excited about learning a new way of working. Considering I need to stay flexible and fully enhance my mobility and traveling, I expect Meta to help me embrace that, too. I'm interested in daily work with multiple virtual desktops. So, I will try to extend my monitor set with additional virtual screens.

Founder of Therr, Inc. - The Local Social Network | Staff Software Engineer @ Instrumental Inc. | Built large scale platforms for multiple startups | Independent, lifelong learner
At Instrumental Inc. we are typically very secretive about the clients we work with. During onboarding 3 years ago, I knew I made the right decision to join, especially after seeing the list of major logos we support. Today we are doing something a bit out of character and publicizing our partnership with @Meta to assist in the quality control of their new hardware. I personally believe this is the sort of edge hardware companies need to outperform competitors in a rapidly evolving market. Don't just take my word for it though, check out the video! Really exciting chapter in tech and at both companies. #AR #Engineering #Innovation
“Instrumental saved us 900+ engineering weeks, a core metric for Meta, unlocking capacity across our hardware and software teams.” - Steve McClure, Senior Director of Hardware Engineering, Reality Labs Meta has an ambitious vision for AR and VR and hired the best and the brightest engineers to work on it. Those visionary engineers have adopted cutting-edge tools and brought about iconic designs. Over the course of a single year, Instrumental’s technology saved Meta teams over 900 engineering weeks. See how Meta accelerated #NPI by adopting #AI in their development process. Read the full case study here: https://lnkd.in/gtHURGRF Special thanks to the incredible engineers who gave their insights. Thank you Miles Hansen, Robert Yang, Saara Khan!

WOW! Meta CRUSHED earnings last quarter! I am beyond proud to work for a company that owns their mistakes and turn things around for their investors and people! Of course it was a magical day at Meta, but this is only the beginning of the future! Stock price hovering around $400 puts us at a market cap of over $1T!! Insane! If you are in the US have 7+ years experience in frontend/backend/full stack, mobile (iOS/Android) or ML we should talk! P.S, you have to be open to hybrid 3x/week out of one of our hubs (Bay Area, Seattle or NYC). Also note if you have less experience, please hold off on reaching out, as I won't be able to help you as of now. Stay tuned, as soon as I get a new focus, you all will be the first to know! #metatothemoon #meta #big7 #techcareerskills #tothemoon #metamate #AI #ML #machinelearning #techrecruiting

Meta is having a rough day with downed systems. Engineering reported having some configuration auto repair loop crashing the systems. The sad thing is they reported some of their other systems avoid this issue using different patterns. Once your teams find a better way to do a platform level function, might as well share it and help all teams benefit across the whole enterprise. The alternative, is the whole enterprise and the customers could suffer. Cross functional teams, platform teams, were made for this. Team Topologies is a great resource to help build this strength. You'll get through this Meta. Deep breaths.

Happy to complete my first week “Back” with #Meta! Thrilled to partner with an exceptional new team and dive again into innovative projects while contributing to an ever-evolving tech landscape of expansive and immersive connectivity. Thank you #Meta and all my former Mentors and Metamates (you know who you are); for your continued guidance or simple motivation. During this past year, I learnt 3 important things: 1. Patience isn’t passive. It is proactive. It helps you focus through the necessary process and manifest what you want most. 2. Rejection is indeed redirection towards something that recognises your capability without question. 3. What you seek most, is also searching for you, just as much as you are searching for it (quoted by a very dear friend; and this is especially for my peers who are still searching, please keep faith, the right role, perhaps even better, will definitely come your way at the right time). Meta has ambitious goals for 2024 and I am excited to continue the journey…God bless. #meta #nyc #hudsonyards

🤔 Ever wondered how Meta tackles the complex challenge of scaling async infrastructure to serve diverse, ever-evolving use cases? It's not just about adding more machines; it's about deploying smart strategies to optimize performance and ensure seamless operations. Curious to learn more? Here are some fascinating insights: 1️⃣ Adding delay tolerance: How does Meta prioritize critical tasks like incident responses for swift resolution? 2️⃣ Setting fixed quotas: Ever considered how allocating CPU/memory quotas prevents one task from overpowering others, ensuring fair resource utilization? 3️⃣ Implementing rate limiting: Wondering how Meta manages peak loads to prevent system overload and maintain stability? 4️⃣ Batch processing and precomputing: How does Meta streamline operations by grouping similar tasks and conducting resource-intensive computations during off-peak hours? 5️⃣ Introducing multiple queues: What's the role of tailored response mechanisms for different use cases, from daily traffic management to handling major events or critical incidents? 6️⃣ Fault tolerance mechanisms: Curious about the redundancy and failover systems that ensure continuous service availability even in the face of hardware failures or disruptions? Explore how these innovative approaches enable Meta to deliver uninterrupted service and enhance operational efficiency: [https://lnkd.in/dE6XAF-9] #TechInnovation #AsyncInfrastructure #SystemDesign #MetaEngineering
