Last month, orthopaedic surgeon Kristofer Jones, MD, threw out the first pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers' Black Heritage Night. Dr. Jones is the head team physician for the Los Angeles Lakers and will be the lead physician for both the men’s and women’s U.S. basketball teams this summer in Paris.
“It means a lot to be here on Black Heritage Night, with my two boys, who are two little Black boys who love to play sports and who look up to athletes,” said Dr. Jones. He noted that Black physicians make up less than 1% of the orthopaedic surgery specialty, “so to be able to serve as a role model for Black children who may want to go into medicine, it feels to me a little bit like the way Jackie Robinson took it upon himself to be a role model for Black people who wanted to play baseball.”

There is an exponential rise in elbow UCL surgery (Tommy John surgery). There are many factors for this, one of which is earlier specialization in baseball and other throwing sports. The UCL repair with internal brace is an amazing surgery with few re-ruptures and has been a workhorse in my throwing athlete practice. While its low, re-tears do occur and when this does the old techniques requiring bone tunnels are not possible. My recently developed UCL reconstruction technique using Arthrex Forktip and Regular swivelocks has been phenomenal when this situation occurs. I’m been shocked with how good the results are with this new technique for both revision and primary UCL reconstruction. I present to you a short video clip from a high level player who failed their repair from an outside facility at 2 years out we revised this to a UCL reconstruction with palmaris autograft in under 45 minutes. The hardest part of this case with finding his ulnar nerve since he had a previous transposition (special thanks to my partner Dr. Wayne Weil!). These cases require a team approach regardless of technique and evaluation of previous tunnels, but when you execute in a safe and efficient fashion its awesome! To see my full technique and learn about this surgery see my website link below. At Orthopedic Specialists of Seattle we offer our high level baseball players most cutting edge techniques to get them back on the field.

One of the best things about living in California is the incredible multiethnic soccer culture. My boys play competitively and are happiest on the pitch, practicing, playing or solo juggling the ball ⚽️Before every game, I share with them 5 key points that I hope they apply to real life:
- “Shoot from distance!”: Never be afraid to take a shot or a chance in life.
- “Win your 1v1 battles!”: Focus on the objective right in front of you; not the noise ahead of you or the detritus behind you.
- “Explode into space!”: If there is uncharted territory - go explore that! Just because no one is creating in space - don’t be afraid to make it your own! Be a leader!
- “Always be scanning!”: Look around you. Opportunities are everywhere.
- “Touches as light as a feather!”: Do what you can the best way you can. Never compromise on the quality of your work.
These are great lessons that I believe can be applied to all aspects of life. Tommy John Surgery, named after the legendary pitcher Tommy John, revolutionized sports medicine 50 years ago.
Frank Jobe, MD, pioneered this groundbreaking procedure in 1974, and ever since countless athletes' careers have been transformed. This year, as the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute highlights some of those players, we also commemorate the ingenuity of Dr. Jobe.
Check out this great write up in the The Associated Press to learn more about UCL reconstruction and the legacy of Frank Jobe.

What is PCL Reconstruction?
The warm weather sports of baseball and soccer have a high incidence of knee injury to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). Preseason training for football and basketball also contribute to a higher number of PCL injuries. A PCL injury can occur during high energy contact with another player on the soccer field, with a hard landing when overtaking the next base in baseball, or a similar high-impact scenario. The ligament may experience an acute sprain, strain, or tear that requires PCL reconstruction. Dr. Cunningham – a sports medicine specialist and board certified orthopedic surgeon – shares important information about PCL injury and what to expect if you are faced with PCL surgery.

*How do I get back to GOLF after a low back injury or surgery*?
This is one the most common questions we face as spine surgeons.
And one that we can pretty confidently assure them that they can return —— but when, and how?
That remains a slight mystery of sorts.
Timelines may vary a bit based on the level of play.
And the mechanics of the swing may not perfectly resemble the pre-injury (or pre-surgical) swing — but that’s necessarily a bad thing!
On this episode of TheAthleteSpine, Dr. Harry Sese joins Venu Nemani, MD, PhD and I. He serves as the Medical Director of GOLFLETICA Sports and Rehab in Bellevue, WA as well as a Health & Performance Coaching to several PGA TOUR Players and the National Hockey League (NHL)'s Vancouver Canucks!
We reflect on Will Zalatoris recently finishing 2nd at the Genesis Invitational, just 10 months after undergoing a lumbar microdiscectomy for herniated discs. We also dive into specific aspects of the golf swing that have changed over time that may place golfers at a greater risk of lumbar injuries. Sprinkle in some training tips and functional recovery tidbits — and you’ll find something you can relate to in this episode whether your handicap is single digits, or you don’t even know what a “handicap” is!
Either way — there remains an incredible connection between the spine and golf play. And there is no universal blueprint to get players back on the course. But, there are certainly some common principles to consider!
Enjoy!
