Freelancing can be a rollercoaster ride - the highs are exhilarating, but the lows can be tough to navigate alone. Grateful for this small circle of fellow freelancers who create a safe space for vulnerability and authenticity. In a world that often values perfection over honesty, finding a group where you can openly share struggles and triumphs is priceless. Here's to embracing our imperfections and supporting each other through the journey. 💪 🤗 #FreelancerLife #Authenticity #SupportSystem

Recently I had a screening call with HR from a well-reputable company in Malaysia. Here is the snippets of it: HR: Since you're a fresh grad - we can only offer you RM2k per month. Me: I see. Considering my working experience and part time projects that I've done, would you be able to increase the salary amount? May I know what's the budget for this role? HR: No, we don't disclose our budget and no, none of your work experiences are applicable for the role. So max we can offer is RM2k. Are you okay with that? I mean, yes, I can say no to her but at this point, it makes me wonder and question myself - if all the part time work, all the internships and freelance work I hustled during my study is a waste? For further context, I applied for Credit Management role - I think I ticked at least 70% of the requirements except that I don't have any practical/hands-on experience. Other than that, I managed to answer her theoretical question on "what is the 5C evaluation model?". Sigh, job hunting is so hard.. Anyways, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it :)

Despite the rise in hiring interns across Indonesia, the majority of these internships remain unpaid. In fact, if a job description lacks compensation details, it’s safer to assume there won’t be any payment. “Well, what about minimum wage laws?” They do not apply to interns. Interns are typically only entitled to allowances, often significantly less than the region’s minimum wage, given mainly to cover food and transportation. This also overlooks the fact that many students have to pay rent if they land an offer far from home. Despite the right to an allowance, a story of an intern raises doubts about its practice. She was an intern at a renowned private international company, yet received an allowance that was less than half of the region’s minimum wage. Shockingly, her friends who were interns at a government-owned company (mind you, the very people that created this allowance law) only received food instead of an allowance. Efforts to find internships in Indonesia marked as “paid” are often in vain. Based on student experiences, even those marketed as "paid" often provide only minimal allowances. This situation might lead to the thought that it’s better not to intern at all. However, with the growing recognition of real-life skill application, some universities are now REQUIRING students to intern. With no breaks long enough for an internship, Indonesian students are taking time off classes to work unpaid while still paying full tuition. This is a pressing issue in a country where many students struggle to pay tuition and do not receive adequate financial aid. Changing this culture is challenging, but what can actually be done? If you’re an Indonesian intern, do you relate to these issues? #intern #internship #magang #paidinternship #magangberbayar #infomagang #magangindonesia

Such an eye-opening experience! Last week was my last day as finance intern at PT Vidio Dot Com. I am very grateful to have these cool and fun team, especially Kak Stella and Kak Ruth, as my mentor during the 5 month internship under Kampus Merdeka MSIB Batch 5 Program. I always remember the time when I was so obsessed to have a job in a creative industry. To be honest, it is as fun as I thought it would be! I am able to gain knowledge about how the business works, what are the buyer and seller rules within the creative industry, and most importantly about how the finance & accounting process in the company itself. During the program, I had the opportunities to experience some roles in Finance Team, such as Account Receivable Officer, Account Payable Officer, and Treasurer. Personally, I got mind blowed by how many invoice we had to sent and received each month, and don't forget the hectic during the closing time. Generally, during the first two months, I am responsible in recap and archiving invoice received. The next two and half month, my Mentor decided that I have to focus on helping Account Receivable Officer and Treasurer. So I spent my time mostly by preparing invoice and it's supporting document, tracking invoice we sent, and filing. I enjoy learning the way a communication being maintain during work. I realize that the most important skills we need to have is team work and communication. There's no point on doing things perfectly if your work is not what the team asked you to do. Anyway, besides the work and knowledge, I also have a good time being exposed by the culture on this office. Everyone is so free! Free to wear any type of clothes, free to express themself, and that would be my fun way to depict a company on creative industry. At last, I would like to say thank you so much to all of the people under Finance and Accounting Team for having me as an intern in Vidio. Sadly, the journey have to come to an end. I hope we can meet again with a better version of our self in the future.

An alumni college friend sent me this memorable moment in University of Indonesia where we sent to the Indonesia accounting fair twelve years ago ( That time i landed my first corporate job too at Citibank Indonesia whilst preparing the mini-thesis defense presentation 😁 ). Reminded me of my first official #parttimejob as lecturer assistant for the prof that i looked up for his professionalism and dedication, Mr. Hermadi Widijanto. After attending classes for over eight hours a day, the last thing students want to do is commit themselves to a four-hour shift, but there are many benefits of working a part-time job for a college student : 01. Gain transferable skills : A part-time job can help students gain key skills from work experience that a university or college degree won’t teach them. 02. Develop interpersonal skills As well as confidence, student employment provides them with an opportunity to learn how to interact with different personalities. 03. Learn to manage time wisely Going to classes, working a part-time job, socialising with friends and making time for students hobbies make for a busy schedule, but juggling so many different tasks can help them improve the time management skills. Indeed, they will generally become more organised and efficient with time, planning ahead to ensure they can fit everything into the limited time they have. 04. Earn extra pocket money What better reason is there to get a part-time job than earning some extra cash? Being a student usually means little or no money, but when they’re working part time, they no longer have to worry about being able to afford the basic essentials – or relying on their parents or student funding to get by. Do you know even Chris Martin' daughter landed her part time job in clothing store too ? 🙂 So why not we generate more productive future generations ? #partimejobs #generationz #productive #students

The Entitled Generation It has always been a practice to have about 10 paid interns working in the resort at anytime and it is sad that more than half of them are useless. BUT, it is interesting to note that the 2 or 3 good ones, who are really good, usually comes from poor families. Most of these hospitality interns have an undeserved sense of entitlement and poor work ethic. Perhaps the problem comes from several broader societal shifts that have given them unrealistic expectations that now hinder workplace culture. Much of the parenting style and education in recent years has focused heavily on boosting self esteem.... but unwarranted praises seems to have fostered inflated views of this generation's abilities, and the worse part is that they don't see their own weaknesses. Some of these younger generations were also raised as "customers" who expect to get what they pay for. This consumer mentality leads to feeling entitled to rewards without wanting to work for it. And what will we see in the near future if these interns continue their career in the hospitality industry? We will see a sense of extra entitlement in the workforce. Entitled employees often have poor work ethics and lack motivation if tasks require struggle. This will often result in less effort and reduced output. For me, this is a bad omen for the future of the hospitality industry in Malaysia because customer service roles, require patience and resilience. This sense of entitlement will eventually manifest as laziness, impatience and indifference.... and all these will result in degrading customer experience. I once took in 30 new hotel interns in another resort, a big one with 550 rooms and a 1500 dining ballroom capacity and purposely scheduled them to start work on our busiest weekend. I also ensured that all our full time employees were on duty plus maximised the number of part timers needed for all departments....and yet even with a full manpower or as one of my HOD mentioned to me....this is overboard la boss, only 2 out of 30 interns returned to work the following Monday. That 2 became full time employees and are doing very well from what I heard, until today.
