"[The expert] blew open the doors for us as beekeepers and showed us the way forward" - Neil Grant, Beneficiary The Guyana Apiculture Society (GAS), led by Neil, is a growing network of beekeepers that promotes rural livelihoods while strengthening Guyana’s natural environment and sustainable agriculture. With 35 members managing close to 600 hives, GAS represents a wealth of years of beekeeping experience. However, they face challenges due to a lack of technical knowledge, adequate government support, training, and best practices. Neil sought the help of Partners' expert Farmer-to-Farmer Program volunteers, who trained 72 people on how to increase honey production and colony productivity: https://lnkd.in/eHk4y3nH With support from Partners of the Americas, GAS beekeepers are learning to work together more efficiently to reach their dream of building a thriving beekeeping culture and industry in Guyana. I’ve long been a fan of the work Evelynn Escobar has done with Hike Clerb Inc, and their upcoming collaboration with The North Face is the perfect example of an industry great teaming up with an impact organization to let them create on *their* terms. Many of our brand clients at Backstory Consulting come to us looking for ways they can equitably support the work of non-profits and charitable organizations. Doing so requires a special mix of thought, strategy, and intention that’s hard for most brands and companies to do on their own. 💡 We always recommend starting with:  1. Identifying 3-5 causes you can responsibly and sustainably support  2. Identifying organizations and non-profits already doing great work in that space 3. Today, let's pay homage to Kenya's majestic forests and appreciate their pivotal role in sustaining life. As we mark the International Day of Forests, it's imperative to take a positive step towards safeguarding our forests. I commend President William Ruto for spearheading Kenya's ambitious goal of reaching a 30% tree cover by 2032 through the National Tree Growing Restoration campaign. This vision just needs each one of us to plant 30 trees every year between now and 2032, especially during the rainy season. Let us be advocates for our forests by engaging in restoration efforts such as adopting degraded forest areas for rehabilitation and combating aggressively any destructive habits that degrade our forests, including deforestation, illegal logging, and charcoal burning. As we celebrate International Day of Forests 2024, may we all become passionate tree growers.

🎶 I get by with a little kelp from my friends... The #KelpForestChallenge is seeing people, governments and organisations around the world stepping in to help kelp 🌿 South Korea has committed to restoring 54,000 hectares of sea forest by 2030. The restoration process involves installing eco-friendly spore bags and attaching pre-grown seaweed to natural bedrocks. 🌿 Washington State has pledged to conserve and restore over 4,000 hectares of kelp and seagrass by 2040. A key part of the plan is to bring together local Indigenous tribes, community members and local nonprofit orgs in the restoration efforts. 🌿 In Portugal, a municipality is trialling a kelp-seeding technique along the coast of Cascais. The process involves seeding pebbles with kelp in a lab. The seedlings are then released to settle on the underlying bedrock to grow and create new patches of kelp forest. 🌍 Empowering Conservationists Globally Like many grassroots conservationists, Micaela Camino plays a vital role, dedicating herself to the farthest reaches of Argentina. Yet, the inherent solitude of such work presents challenges in building capabilities and fostering knowledge exchange with peers and organizations. Micaela, with more than a decade of experience as a conservationist, has encountered the drawbacks of operating in an isolated region, marked by limited professional presence and scarce opportunities for knowledge sharing. This highlights the importance of initiatives like the Winner Network Development Programme organized by the Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) in Brazil—a project we proudly support. We believe in the power of facilitating training programs and knowledge exchanges among conservation stakeholders. Our commitment extends to providing a platform for grassroots conservation leaders, enabling peer-led discussions on critical subjects. 🗯️ Annually, our partner WFN orchestrates a transformative training week in a different region of the world, bringing together #WhitleyAwards alumni residing in proximity.
