Are visitors the 'great unwashed'? Last week a North Yorkshire councillor suggested that was the case, when he criticised their behaviour in the countryside. The comments were made during a meeting about over-tourism in some locations. It's really disappointing that coverage of the meeting and subsequent discussions have focused on the words used, with seemingly little in-depth discussion about possible solutions to visitor management issues. Few are talking about how to re-direct visitors to places where they will be really welcome (and where the economy really needs them). There's little debate about how to encourage slow travel, or how to enhance understanding and appreciation of local distinctiveness. There's even less consideration of how we can harness visitor spend for the good of our local communities - or about the places that are struggling, despite the claims of over-crowding in some areas. The level of debate seems ridiculously low, considering how long these issues have been around.

We’ve been making some great progress on data collection these past two weeks and the system is growing fatter every day from all the lovely numbers we’re feeding it! 😋 Amongst some of the data we now have in the system: 🎯 Daily car park figures for 105 car parks across Somerset. This shows us the number of tickets sold every day in all 105 car parks. Using this analysis we can see how long visitors are choosing to park when visiting the various destinations. Other areas to follow soon… 🎯 Self-Catering data for 32 different zones across Devon and Somerset. This data allows us to track the number of listings, accommodation occupancy and Average Daily Rate of self-catering properties. Further in-depth analysis of self-catering stays will also be available in due course. 🎯 Daily Traffic Counts for major tourism routes across Devon and Somerset Weather insights. So useful to look at alongside other trackers to help understand what caused a spike or a dip in performance. 🎯 Survey results – we’ve begun an ongoing survey of a nationally representative sample of non-visitors to Devon and Somerset to understand what people’s perceptions are of the Counties and some of the hotspots within them. With two months of results back in we can already spot some interesting trends… We’re thoroughly enjoying the development of this system for the region and are already excited by some of the insights emerging, even at this early stage! 🤓 Sign up to our monthly newsletter https://lnkd.in/dUs9k3VJ , or follow us here on LinkedIn. This week, we explored the dynamic New Orleans market. This city was no stranger to the challenges of COVID-19, especially with its strong tourism focus. We’ve seen significant growth up to 2022, but 2023 shows a different trend. Rates have climbed compared to the pre-COVID era but might dip compared to 2022. In my many years in the industry friends and family on the outside looking in on this industry always ask me will timeshare come to an end and will people still come? This is a great video on what our CEO sees in future growth by the way of arrivals from pandemic to post pandemic. See regardless of the way or means people book their vacation they are still coming. So with or without timeshare people are traveling and the length of stays have been becoming longer. The new “Gig” economy is allowing people to continue to work from home or work for themselves and free the once “ discretionary purchases “ meaning vacations or vacation ownership to become Mandatory purchases! Great video and insight on the travel industry in a whole…. Great perspective
What kind of vacation ownership demand are we seeing as we look at forward bookings? How are our customers continuing to adapt to travel in a post-pandemic world? And how are macroeconomic trends impacting leisure travel? On the heels of our earnings report, I had a great conversation with Brian Sullivan on CNBC’s “The Exchange” about these topics and much, much more. https://lnkd.in/eiQdzdHi #travelandleisureco #traveltrends #earnings $tnl

Region’s visitor numbers on the rise as more people come to experience North East England! The newly released STEAM data sees visitor numbers and spend grow across the region as the visitor economy continues to recover to pre-pandemic levels. The latest STEAM* data gathered on behalf of the region’s 7 local authority areas by Destination North East England has revealed a promising upward trend versus the previous year’s results, as the region welcomes over 69 million visitors, an increase of 5% on 2022. Whilst visitor numbers haven’t quite bounced back to pre-pandemic highs, growth can be seen right across the region particularly across the number of day visits, with travellers descending on vibrant urban areas, tranquil countryside and stunning coastlines for unforgettable days out. The visitor economy continues to be a vital contributor to the region’s economy overall, with over 63,000 now employed in tourism, hospitality, and the wider visitor economy supply chain.
