David Jackson, Senior Reporter, Injustice Watch, and Steven Waldman, President, Rebuild Local News, and Co-Founder, Report for America, shared personal anecdotes while emphasizing the importance of building relationships with communities to bolster local news and local reporters in the face of “news deserts” and the collapse of the business model of journalism. Ultimately, it is not always what a reporter writes, but it is the conversations they have with their fellow community members that can make the greatest impact in instilling and building trust in the media. #JournalismUnderSiege

I am thrilled to see the launch of #PressForward, a coalition of #philanthropic donors committed to strengthening #communities and #American #democracy anchored by #localnews! The initial investment is $500 million over five years, with the aim of raising $1 billion from additional members. Since 2005, approximately 2,200 #local #newspapers have closed, resulting in 20 percent of Americans living in “#news deserts” with little to no #reliable coverage of important local events. And local news is not partisan! Independent of ideology, Press Forward plans to work with More Perfect, a #bipartisan initiative advancing five interrelated democracy goals. “We have a moment to support the reimagination, revitalization, and rapid development of local news.,” said John Palfrey, president of the MacArthur Foundation. “The #philanthropic sector recognizes the need to strengthen American democracy and is beginning to see that progress on every other issue, from #education and #healthcare to #criminaljusticereform and #climatechange, is dependent on the #public's understanding of the #facts.” Managed by The Miami Foundation, the partners are focused on #grantmaking in four areas of focus: strengthening local #newsrooms, scaling #infrastructure, ending #inequalities, and advancing #publicpolicy. To learn more and get involved: pressforward.news Initial Press Forward partners are #TheArchewellFoundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln, Democracy Fund, Ford Foundation, Mary W. Graham, Glen Nelson Center at American Public Media Group, Heising-Simons Foundation, Henry Luce Foundation Inc, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, The Joyce Foundation, KFF, Knight Foundation, The Lenfest Institute for Journalism, Lumina Foundation, McKnight Foundation, Outrider Foundation, Rita Allen Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Skyline Foundation, and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
In an era marked by misinformation and the decline of traditional media, the preservation of local news has emerged as a critical endeavor. As a Foundation committed to the well-being of society, we recognize the urgent need to support and sustain local journalism. By investing in local news, we can strengthen democracy, empower communities, and foster an informed citizenry. We're excited to announce #PressForward, a robust coalition of funders who aim to infuse local journalism with a billion dollars over the next five years. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gCdJNseu

For more than 20 years, I’ve been helping Ontario journalists find sources and cover municipal stories. In that time I’ve also been criss-crossing the province to deliver many hundreds of media and social media training sessions. In recent years, I’ve have had to start by asking, “What local media remains?” While the answers vary tremendously, we know that: ➡️ Ontario is no longer covered by media. Only parts of it are. ➡️ There are huge gaps between ‘news islands’. ➡️ The number of news islands continues to shrink. We are down to about twelve. ➡️ This has tremendous implications for our democracy, and in particular, the strength of democracy in the hundreds of municipalities that are not covered. Democracy depends on a well-informed public being able to discuss and debate policies using commonly known facts. ➡️ Municipal governments tend to miss having informed reporters who ask challenging questions. Governments don’t mind being challenged. They are used to being yelled at. Responding to wild conspiracies, rumours, and fantasy is MUCH harder, far more time consuming, and kind of soul destroying. At the OSUM Conference we will look at what the decline of media means, and what can be done to support the media that’s left (and rising from the ashes of traditional media). Personally, I will giving my thoughts on how municipal governments can adapt to this ongoing change, and what they can do to maintain a well-informed electorate.
Believe it or not, most municipal governments want local media. The decline of media creates real challenges. This panel will provide advice on how to support and nurture local journalism, and how to tell your story in this new environment.
