Here’s one that you may not be paying much attention to but could be extremely valuable: caulking and sealing your exterior windows and doors. 🚪 Do you have any doors or windows that let light bleed in through cracks in the foundation? Well, that doesn’t just mean you have holes in the wall → that means you are far more likely to see damages when heavy objects or winds threaten your home. Potholes meet climate change. And odd mix perhaps for many, but one that makes national news on the BBC website today (https://lnkd.in/g_WZHUzN). Roads become worse over time, because of usage: that is clear to all. But climate change, as noted by those who maintain those roads and scientists looking into the matter, speeds up the process, sometimes dramatically. For instance: higher temperatures cause greater tar viscosity, gravel sinks, and the cover gets ripped by passing vehicles. It is not only the tarmac itself though. It's also what it's on. As work carried out in Lincolnshire by Oliver Pritchard (https://lnkd.in/g3zF3PVa) and Mark Heaton and colleagues (https://lnkd.in/g22wcqh2) has shown, the substrate underpinning the roads is also changing due to greater swings in temperature and, most importantly moisture. Compression and shrinkage lead to more frequent deformation of the roads. There is research ongoing on potential solutions, as reported by the BBC. Whether that can evolve at the speed required to mitigate the effects of a rapidly changing climate is an empirical question. Whether there will be funding to make these changes effective on the ground is another. Given the impending cascade of bankruptcies in local authorities many observers have been warning about for some time (https://lnkd.in/gGwUDp4d; https://lnkd.in/gufBaTfZ), one may be concerned that this crisis will only grow, not recede.
