Toxicity studies were just guessing what’s in there" Beizhan Yan Just as the new year rolls in, so does yet another harrowing reality of plastic bottles for human consumption... 90% of the plastic particles found in plastic bottles are "Nanoplastics", not only do they contain around 100X more plastics than "microplastics" but they are also so small that they can penetrate human cells, getting into your bloodstream and organs. Plastic bottles are not only polluting our planet at an extreme rate, but also polluting our bodies. Microplastics are everywhere in our oceans, and the stats are alarming.   A recent study showed that every single marine creature tested, from fish to shrimp, had microplastics inside them. These tiny particles damage vital organs and mess with their ability to survive and reproduce. These microplastics are finding their way into us, too, turning up in human blood and organs. But, we can do something about it, and it all starts on land: - Cut the plastic - reducing plastic usage and improving waste management are key. Use less, recycle more. - Clean up - supporting initiatives aimed at removing existing plastics from land, oceans and waterways is essential. - Lay down the law - demand tougher rules on plastic use and waste management. Saying yes to banning things like plastic forks and spoons, demanding better packaging, and supporting Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws can make a huge difference. EPR ensures that manufacturers are held accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products, especially when it comes to disposal and recycling. #microplastics #plasticpollution #recycling #epr #cleanoceans

New research: "We have identified that plastic leaked into the environment undergoes an accelerated weathering process, transforming into secondary microplastics that can serve as neurotoxic substances, leading to increased inflammation and cell death in the BRAIN ... ... The implications of microplastics’ harmfulness are particularly alarming, as secondary microplastics exposed in natural environments induce a more severe inflammatory response in the brain" Context: microplastic pollution is already terrible and set to get worse. Right now, we eat, drink and breathe plastic with every meal, every drink and every breath we take. We do so at about 200,000 plastic particles for every human being on the planet every year It's going to get worse if we don't stop it: In just 10 years, "$200b was invested in 333 new plastic production factories in the US alone and plastic production is on track to double in the next decade as oil companies make it their Plan B in case of falling oil demand" Imagine if consumers worldwide looked at fast fashion and instead of ‘made from polyester’, they saw ‘made of plastic derived from crude oil and produced using harmful chemicals, including carcinogens’? That would dampen sales Plastic is an evil tour de force of branding and the word ‘plastic’ is manipulative in the extreme. Plastic’s building blocks, called polymers, are in 99% of cases made from coal, gas and crude oil. What if the label of your next gym or running shirt read "Made of plastic derived from crude oil and produced using harmful chemicals, including carcinogens"? Or "This t-shirt can cause serious harm to the environment, to your health, and the health of others"? I do recommend this book by Assaad Razzouk : it should be mandatory in the curriculum of all schools.

Plastic production has reached unprecedented levels, posing significant threats not only to human health but to the well-being of all living beings on our planet. Countless marine species, from seabirds to turtles to whales, mistake plastic items for food, leading to internal injuries, starvation, and death. The author shows that plastic pollution poses grave health risks to humans which are not even fully understood yet . Governments must implement stringent regulations to limit plastic production, promote sustainable alternatives, and invest in recycling infrastructure and waste management systems. There are essentially 2 options to re-align the markets with reality . Firstly, high taxes on plastic production at the source meaning producers not consumers , secondly the inclusion of the negative effects of plastic production to health , environment society as expenses into the financial statements. In conclusion, the imperative to halt plastic production goes beyond environmental conservation—it is a matter of public health and the well-being of all living beings. Political leaders must heed this call to action and enact meaningful policies to address the root causes of plastic pollution, safeguarding the health of both human populations and the natural world.
