💡 Technology Spotlight: Stripline MMIC Interconnect on Recessed LTCC Abstract This invention is a new method of assembling a die into a high-frequency circuit using a stripline interconnect on recessed low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC). The ground plane is used to improve the thermal performance and confinement of the high-frequency signal, while the stripline method reduces insertion loss and variance, and improves isolation and dispersion of the signal. The interconnect is created through aerosol jet printing, which allows for the additive manufacturing of the tapered structure to reduce impedance mismatch. Problem Addressed by Claimed Invention High-frequency components used in millimeter wave systems are sensitive to losses and signal distortion due to interconnects that join the wafer to the circuit board or package. The losses and distortion increase as frequency increases due to radiative, coupling, ohmic, dielectric, and reflection losses. 💡 Technology Spotlight: Copper Tape Manipulator for Additive Manufacturing This invention describes a method and a system for 3D printing of continuous copper tape by automated placement and manipulation. Problem Addressed by Claimed Invention Additive manufacturing (or 3D printing) of electrical conductors can be critical for electronic components fabrication, which has wide applications in sensors, circuits, antennas, etc. The current 3D printing techniques mainly use conductive inks or composites for conductor manufacturing; however, they typically need complex preparation processes, show low conductivity, and some require post-annealing to get good conductivity, which can seriously affect the compatibility with other printing materials to form embedded electronics. Copper tape can be low-cost but highly conductive and is widely used for conductors. However, it has not been used for 3D printing of conductors. We here disclose the invention of a low-cost manipulator or end-effector or printhead for continuous copper tape placement/printing, which can be easily integrated with xyz stages and robotic arms. Boston-based Desktop Metal was a portfolio company of Aramco Ventures and as a result, I had the opportunity to follow this company, its technology and its commercial traction closely. There is no doubt tech value and it is good to see that this company survived post the mostly ill-fated De-SPACs of that recent era of mass value destruction and in spite of a highly volatile public trading run, Desktop Metal should now have a stable home in Nano Dimension to scale its technologies and innovations in what also seems to be quite an attractive value for the buyer (on the other hand, tough outcomes for the venture capital fund managers and corporates, unless investment cost/sub-cost are acceptable). Access to #capital can be a real barrier to adoption of #AdditiveManufacturing technology in small and medium-sized manufacturers. This is especially true in today’s tighter financial market.
