Are retailers moving fast enough as they build out retail media? Are they setting themselves up to be self-sufficient? Get ready for part 2 of our #RetailMedia series on the Middlemen...we talk about how retailers have begun the process of in-housing their technology, and their slow slide toward becoming digital publishers. Why is it happening slowly? Because display ads on retailers never really worked. We also cover Costco's launch of its Off-site retail media offering, and how (this part is a rant) unsophisticated press coverage is stuck treating all retail media capabilities as one monolithic thing, and holding back an understanding of the business. Some shout outs to Mark Williamson of Costco Wholesale and Michael Halverson of Albertsons Media Collective in this episode as well as a lot of talk about the rise, fall and dispersion of talent from Quotient to the rest of the retailers and vendors who are building out retail media. And here comes another edition of our Middlemen Podcast: Episode 5 overall and Part 2 of our 3 parter on retail media titled "The Current State of Retail Media" from Tom Limongello and myself. Last week in Episode 3, we explored the origins of retail media and next week we'll look ahead and make predictions about the future of retail media. Back to this week's discussion where we touch on - Costco's recent retail media announcement - The movement for retailers to inhouse existing adtech from companies like Kevel, Criteo, TTD and others. - How the Quotient Alumni Network seems to be the connection point across all retail media efforts - And a rant from yours truly about how everyone is misusing the network moniker with retail media

We are back for Ep. 3! We focus on Tom Limongello's long career in Retail Media to get into the origins of it. Yes - that means Retail Media and RMN's have actually been around a lot longer than most people realize. So for those wondering where did it all come from - tune in for a listen of this week's episode of the Middlemen Podcast! #adtech #ecommerce #retailmedia
Today the Middlemen are starting our series on #RetailMedia ! There's a persistent narrative out there that retail media is new, but it's not. By going back far enough we can show there was a fully functioning retail media ecosystem in and around stores before we digitized it. The roots come in terms like #TradeMarketing #ShopperMarketing #CoOpMarketing and in this episode, Todd Sawicki and I go back 100 years to understand the conditions that started the relationships between brands and retailers. BTW, we don't as far back as Adam Heimlich goes in his fantastic google antitrust podcast which starts at the Civil War (definitely check that out). We *do* go back to how Piggly Wiggly invented the Supermarket and in-store shopping behavior, which was first detailed in a book called the Secret Life of Groceries. We'll also come full-circle in future episodes in this series to look at how today digital retail media tactics are both coming back into the store as Andrew Lipsman has shown in his recent posts, as well as how retail media is extending further into the world of Tom Triscari's gravity theory of data trades. But for now, a little history lesson that I've lived through with my colleagues at Unilever and at Crisp and Quotient. https://lnkd.in/eb_w5Ngx
