What a mess… In summary: Slack, Salesforce-owned, is using users' content (e.g. messages, uploads, etc) to train its AI models used in their AI-powered apps. The insane product decision is that everyone is opted in by default - and if you want to opt out, the “companies or workspace administrators (not individual users) are able to request via email” (!) As AI products grow, our attention to ethics must grow just as fast. This is an extremely poor product decision, although it’s clear that someone in Slack/Salesforce think otherwise. Please do not put your raw research data directly into ChatGPT. I just read several disconcerting things: 1. Whatever you put into ChatGPT they can use and add to their database from which to draw info. Samsung just found this out the hard way after letting developers put their code in. Now they're facing multiple breeches. (link in comments) Putting in raw data could cause problems for your org and (more importantly), it violates the trust you have with your very generous research participant. Depending on what they've shared, it could even cause them harm or put them at risk. Sabrina Meherally and sahibzada mayed (صاحبزادہ مائد) are hosting a wonderful event later today to talk about Deconstructing the Role of User Research that ties directly into things like how you use participant data. You should absolutely attend; link in comments. 2. There's now an AI tool that claims to be able to give user research insights without talking to users. First of all, that's called guessing, even if it's "educated" guessing. Second, by inputting your research data into ChatGPT, AI tools like that one can leverage that data over and over again. Ooops. ChatGPT and similar AI tools are fun. They're powerful. They can help us with a lot. But we need to be thoughtful and cautious about how and what we share and make use of them, since your inputs will be used beyond your own purpose. It's not free - you are the product.
