I think Lawrence Freedman makes a valid point that NATO should respect Putin’s nuclear red line to avoid escalation, but I wonder how realistic that is in practice. How can NATO reassure its allies and partners in Eastern Europe without provoking Russia? How can NATO deter other forms of aggression, such as cyberattacks or hybrid warfare, that fall below the nuclear threshold?

It's crucial to acknowledge the catastrophic consequences of nuclear conflict, including permanent damage to the Earth's environment, inhabitants, and ecosystems. The use of nuclear weapons by any nation is reprehensible and would have devastating effects for generations to come. Preserving the habitability of our planet should be a top priority for all nations. Ref. NORWAY NOW HAS B61-12 NUCLEAR GRAVITY BOMBS. Pictured here from an undisclosed vault. It is called Nuclear Sharing within NATO. However, non of these bombs will reach its destinations in Russia. An addition to it's Nuclear Doctrine has been made, and any threat towards Russia's vital installations - regardless weather it is conventional or nuclear - will be targeted and destroyed in a pre-emptive strike. Also, a possible attack on Norway will not come in north Norway but from an East-Westerly direction, likely from the direction of Kaliningrad.

* Russian nuclear doctrine, especially its doctrine related to non-strategic nuclear weapons (NSNW), has become one of the most pressing issues in international relations. Publics around the world are paying close attention to the war in Ukraine and Russia’s reckless use of nuclear threats to attempt to coerce Ukraine and the West, as well as its recent declared intention to station NSNW on Belarusian territory. * China is watching the conflict carefully and drawing lessons that it may apply in a potential war against Taiwan or elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific – a fact well known to the countries across that region. * A particularly concerning development, from the perspective of the West, is Russia’s belief in its ability to gain and maintain escalation dominance, as well as absorb personnel and materiel losses to a degree unimaginable to the West. This tolerance for casualties may also be shared by China. * The more that can be understood of Russian doctrine and military thought related to NSNW, the more likely it is that deterrence with Russia can be maintained. Understanding Russia and maintaining deterrence vis-à-vis Russia are a matter of survival for the West. For the purposes of this paper, the definition of NSNW, taken from the US Department of Defense, is: ‘nuclear weapons designed to be used on a battlefield in military situations. This is opposed to strategic nuclear weapons, which are designed to be used against enemy cities, factories, and other larger-area targets to damage the enemy’s ability to wage war.’ https://lnkd.in/d_h3ziST Well done William!

Using nuclear weapons to accomplish limited military objectives has come to be viewed in the West as unthinkable. The danger of escalation to a cataclysmic exchange is deemed too great when confronting other nuclear powers, and nuclear use against non-nuclear powers is deemed immoral. That is not the way nuclear weapons are viewed in Moscow. With each rewrite of Russian military strategy since the Soviet Union collapsed, nuclear weapons have claimed a greater role in the nation’s defense posture. This is not just posturing, or paranoia, or compensation for a lack of resources to keep up with Western advances in conventional weapons. It reflects a different view of the utility nuclear weapons might have in future conflicts—a view not unlike that of the Eisenhower administration, which favored equipping U.S. forces with tactical nuclear systems for a variety of battlefield purposes. That different view is reflected in the fact that Russia has many times more low-yield, short-range nuclear systems than the U.S.—up to 2,000, according to some sources.
