Overcoming challenges in the quest for perfection. A central challenge in realising this design lay in determining the optimal presentation for a sculpture fashioned entirely from 304 stainless steel, a material inherently imbued with substantial weight. After careful consideration, I resolved this puzzle by fashioning a looped stand specifically engineered to both support the sculpture’s heft and showcase the eagle in its gripping “catching prey” posture. ⚡ Exploring the fascinating art of Glass-Blowing 🌱 Did you know that the art of glass-blowing has a history of over 2,000 years? ⏱ It's a craft that's stood the test of time, and I'm excited to share some of its story with you today. 👇 Glass-blowing, as we know it, was born in the Roman Empire in the first century BC. It revolutionized the way beautiful glass objects were created. Prior to this, glassware was made by casting or cutting solid glass, which involved much more work. The birthplace of glass-blowing is debated, and some attribute its origin to Syria and others to the Roman city of Sidon. Regardless of its exact birthplace, it quickly spread throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. 🎨 Glass-blowing allowed artisans to shape molten glass into intricate and delicate shapes. This paved the way for the creation of stunning glassware, from colorful vases to ornate windows. The technique involved blowing air through a tube into a bubble of molten glass, which was then formed with a tool. 🔥 Over the centuries, glass-blowing techniques continued to evolve and played a vital role in the development of stained glass windows for churches, intricate glass jewelry, and glass ornaments. 🚀 Fast forward to today, and glass-blowing remains a thriving art form. ART OF THE SOUL Fine Art and Jewelry Creative Process: Following my spiritual practice in meditation, I arrive at a positive affirmation and story that then translates into a rich, dynamic drawing. Many of my art pieces undergo a lengthy creative process to become fine jewelry. In the beginning I first developed the two-dimensional drawing into a three-dimensional sculptured jewelry design by carving the design into a wood model. Today, I work with a Cad designer to bring my designs into 3-D and every piece requires attention to the smallest detail. You know the one -- Isamu Noguchi’s washi and bamboo lights, the Akari. Whether it’s a pendant or a lamp, these lights have stood the test of time with enduring design and soft atmospheric qualities that create a unique sense of peace in any space. A sculptor and designer, Noguchi was often faced with the question – is the Akari art or design? Noguchi always said that his Akari was a 'valid expression of sculpture.' However, some of his contemporaries questioned whether he might have stretched the definition of art too far when characterizing his Akari as such. After all, the Akari serves a functional purpose and is produced in multiples. Over its history, there have been a hundred different designs, spanning from simple geometries like spheres and cubes to more elaborate sculptural forms and washi patterns. While many of these designs could be considered works of art, each hand-made in traditional processes, I wonder whether the presence of many replicas on the market contributes to a sense of ‘reproduction’ more than is the reality. Noguchi stated that “to start a home all that is needed is a room, a [tatami] pad and an Akari.” So, it wasn’t surprising to learn that sales of the iconic Akari lights had skyrocketed during the pandemic, rising 44% from the previous year.
