For recruiters/employers, it damages their brand reputation and makes it harder to attract top talent. For job seekers, it's a frustrating and demoralizing experience. Here are some key takeaways from the recent article from Fast Company below: The number of Glassdoor reviews mentioning ghosting has nearly doubled since before the pandemic. Job seekers are also ghosting employers more often, but this may be due to fears of a recession and a competitive job market. In today's competitive labor market, job ghosting has unfortunately become all too common, posing a significant challenge for job seekers. But what exactly is job ghosting? Job ghosting refers to the awful practice of abruptly ceasing all communication with a candidate, leaving them in the dark about their application status. Instead of providing constructive feedback or closure, hiring teams opt for silence, hoping the candidate will interpret it as a sign of rejection. Imagine this: You submit your résumé, attend multiple interviews over several months, and invest time and effort into showcasing your skills and enthusiasm for the role. Yet, despite your best efforts, you're met with nothing but radio silence from the hiring team. Calls, texts, emails, and LinkedIn messages go unanswered, leaving you in limbo, pissed off and hurt. This lack of communication is not only disorienting but also deeply discouraging for candidates. It leaves them feeling undervalued and disrespected, having invested significant time and energy into the hiring process. Moreover, without any feedback, job seekers are left in the dark about areas for improvement, hindering their ability to grow and succeed in future opportunities. Job ghosting isn't just frustrating—it's detrimental to both candidates and employers. It's rude. It's awful. It erodes trust, damages employer branding, and perpetuates a culture of indifference in the hiring process. I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darnit people like me -- so why in the heck am I getting ghosted? Welp? Sadly, you're not alone. According to the good folks at HR Dive (such a great resource), a staggering 8 in 10 Hiring Managers Admit that they are ghosting candidates. "In the survey of 625 hiring managers, only 20% said they never ghost candidates. On the other hand, 11% said they always ghost candidates, while 22% said they frequently ghost candidates and 47% said they occasionally ghost candidates." The question is why? Among those who ghost candidates, the top reasons the survey mentions are: * uncertainty about whether the candidate is the best option * indecision around the right candidate * feeling overwhelmed by the high volume of candidates * concern around the candidate’s fit for the role or company culture * concern around the candidate’s salary expectations * or they’re no longer hiring for the role. What Can you do about it? 1. Don't conflate applying for a job -- and not hearing back -- with being ghosted. If you've interviewed and you don't hear back -- now that's ghosting. Don't be afraid to send the recruiter or HR person a polite follow up inquiring if the role is still open. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it is not. 2. Apply mostly to the roles that you're a "solid fit" for. Meaning that when your resume lands in a hiring manager's inbox they will say out loud: YES! This is the Candidate I have been looking for! How do you up your chances, instead of applying to anything that is open, spend time researching the competitors (direct and adjacent) and in terms of level, go one notch higher, lateral or one down. 3. Flip the script: Never forget that 80% of all jobs are landed through networking. Yet, most candidates spent 80% of their time applying to online job posts. Most candidates spend too much time applying to any open job. It feels good when you hit submit, but the results don't when you don't get the call back. 4. If you're more senior than the hiring manager, it's going to be a tough road to land that job. It takes a really confident boss to hire more senior. In these cases, offer your skills as a consultant where you can prove that you won't be a threat. 5. Don't go it alone. Always team up with a job hunting buddy (especially if you're senior and seasoned! Having regular weekly check ins and being cross- accountable is critical. It makes such a giant difference in the process.

Let's talk about Candidate Ghosting. As a recruiter, I want to talk to you, hear your story, and find the best fit for you within our company. My job becomes so much harder when a candidate is non-responsive, especially after an offer has been extended. Yes, it happens! This is a trend that seems to be increasing in frequency, so if you are a job seeker here are 3 things you need to know. 1. Stay in touch with your recruiter. They are your first step towards elevating your career. 2. Be aware that the consequences of ghosting may catch up with you in the future. Applicant Tracking Systems are making it easier to keep track of candidates who have a habit of ghosting. 3. Relax! If you think your recruiter is ghosting you, don't worry. We are really busy talking to people all day and we will reach out. Don't be afraid to follow up!

"Ghosting can be a sign that the organization demonstrates unethical hiring practices or has a toxic company culture with a lack of respect for its workers." I experienced this unprofessional phenomenon as a three-time #jobseeker over the past two years. After multiple rounds of interviews in which I’m practically told I’m the best thing since sliced 🍞… 🦗🦗. Days become weeks of silence. Having been on the other end as an #hrmanager at two different businesses, I can attest there's little excuse for this nonsense. For the most part, it’s pretty easy to either a) keep a jobseeker in the loop if there are delays or b) tell them they are no longer under consideration, so they can move on with their life. To clarify: ignoring applications from unqualified applicants is not ghosting. It would be ideal but unreasonable to expect businesses to respond to EVERYONE who applies (auto-reject #ats features can make this possible for some). However, the moment a #recruiter (or HR rep) initiates contact, the applicant becomes a candidate. From that point moving forward, while it is certainly possible to encounter roadblocks in the hiring process, #communication is key. Ghosting can come off as disrespectful towards the candidate, or it can indicate a lack of intestinal fortitude of those involved in the hiring process. Either way, it is not a good look for that company. Recruiters, #humanresources representatives, and #hiringmanagers: let's do better. As a job seeker, being ghosted by employers has become an all-too-common occurrence. It's frustrating to put in the effort to apply and interview for a position, only to never hear back from the company. It's even more frustrating to know that many Applicant Tracking Systems have the option to notify all candidates once a position has been filled. While an automated response may not be personal, it's better than no response at all. An article I recently read put it perfectly: "just as organizations seek professional and courteous behavior from candidates, the same should be reciprocated. Failing to communicate honestly and transparently not only damages an employer’s reputation but also undermines the broader hiring ecosystem." It's important for companies to treat job candidates with respect and transparency, just as they would treat their customers.
