ABIBIMAN | BATTLE FOR THE ANCESTRY HOME (Movie Concept Poster Design) -------------------------- 👨🎓 Abibiman Meaning Abibiman is a Ghanaian word that means "Land of the Black Man" or "Land of the Africans." It is a term that is often used to refer to Africa as a whole, or to specific parts of Africa that are inhabited by black people. 🌍 Historical Context The term Abibiman was first used in the 19th century by the Akan people of Ghana. It was used to distinguish their land from the land of the Europeans, who were colonizing Africa at the time. ✊🏿 Cultural Significance Today, the term Abibiman is still used by many Africans as a symbol of their pride and identity. It is a reminder of their shared history and culture, and of their connection to the African continent.

The term "ghetto" originated in Venice, where Jewish people were confined in the 16th century. It likely derived from "ghèto," meaning "foundry" due to its proximity to one. Gradually, it broadened to signify segregated neighborhoods for marginalized communities, emphasizing isolation and enforced residency beyond Venice's confines. Slavery is ancestral work. Are you subscribed to our Patreon yet? Become a free or paying member and help us support our storytelling activism. In our latest Patreon video, social historian and educator Najumoeniesa Damon emphasizes that South African history did not begin with apartheid. Why is this important? It challenges Eurocentric narratives and highlights the rich and diverse cultures that existed long before colonialism, including the Khoisan and Bantu-speaking peoples who contributed immensely to our nation's heritage. Resistance to oppression didn’t start with apartheid either. Understanding these earlier movements reveals a long tradition of resilience and struggle for justice among South Africans. What's your favourite or most interesting part of South African history that's often overlooked? Let us know in the comments 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾 Watch the full video here: https://lnkd.in/dmsNSZtW

On this Juneteenth, I am remembering that freedom has never been given. The oppressors did not suddenly come to a moral realization or recognition of our humanity. Neither did the emancipation proclamation develop out of altruism. We have been freeing ourselves for centuries through a variety of means including uprisings, political influence, building community, advocacy, education, creativity, ingenuity, ownership, and individual/collective healing- the aptitude for all of which, we have always had. It's important to note that "slave" (a term succeeded by other terms in the white body lexicon to dehumanize) was the identity African bodies were made to believe and accept about themselves. The role and presence of African bodies in the global and historical context is so much greater and more important than the 250-400 years of white body American history. Though held captive for a time, it is a tale to think our identity was ever anything other than fully human and inherently free. It's important because when we know who we are and supposed to be, anything else that is imposed on us becomes foreign and we learn to resist with every ounce of our being. I celebrate Juneteenth today in honor of our perpetual resistance and the ancestors who show us the way. It is a day truly of our own meaning making.

Wow. Poignant. Haunting. Visceral in impact. A masterclass in visual narrative.
Ghanaian 🇬🇭 artist Kwame Akoto-Bamfo created several sculptures in a small lake to remember African ancestors who dr0wned as they were transported through the Atlantic Sea during slàvery. Some deliberately chose the ocean over slavery. Slavery is not the history of Africans, slavery interrupted the history of Africans. #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #black #history #slavery #africans #africa #ghana
