Seven in 10 people want to be able to see a GP urgently within 24 hours, research by the NHS’s patient watchdog has found. Almost three-quarters (71%) of voters in England support automatic access to a family doctor within one day of requesting an appointment for a health problem they consider cannot wait. The Government must hate primary care, surely? Winter is extremely busy for practices, with patient contacts booming, and there is no extra funding for them? This is a horrible situation and I hope there is a massive U-turn as this is an incredibly naive decision. A few days ago we saw the proposals for central health hubs rather than individual surgeries, and this seems like another part of their plan to slowly phase out the Partnership model. This will cause a domino effect, with understaffed GPs being unable to cope with the volume of appointments, thus creating a spillage into other NHS services, decreasing its effectiveness altogether. As those working in #PrimaryCare know only too well, #GP practices face multiple challenges, and staff are being asked to work under intolerable strain as they try their best to meet ever-growing patient demand. So it’s great to see The Labour Party identifying some of these challenges – and we applaud Wes Streeting for his pledge to invest the substantial resources required to solve them. 👏 As the new Health Secretary says, primary care really is the “front door” to healthcare – and the foundation of NHS England.
