Anti-Slavery Day Statement “No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms”, Article 4, Universal Declaration of Human Rights.     The word slavery conjures up historical images of Biblical slaves or the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Modern slavery may not involve shackles and chains but there are more slaves today than at any point in human history. Modern slavery continues to represent grave violations of human rights.     Today, on anti-slavery day, we remain hopeful for justice. “Speaking out against the flagrant violations of human dignity implicit in this crime, should be in our [the Jewish community’s] DNA”, Chief Rabbi.  From experience, we understand that all people should be treated with dignity and respect, free from destitution and exploitation. That all people, including those fleeing terror and persecution or avoiding exploitation as we did, should not face suspicion, punishment, and cruelty.  However, the UK government’s Illegal Migration Act’s provisions present serious implications for large numbers of people who are victims of modern slavery and trafficking. By shutting the doors on people who need support, the government is forcing people who are in desperate situations to live without legal status – under constant threat of detention and deportation, and vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation. By portraying victims of trafficking and forced labour as criminals, the government is punishing them for things they were coerced into doing, instead of protecting and providing the support they need to break free from exploitation. As we savour our freedom, we should remember the countless people around the world, including here in the UK, who do not share our good fortune. We urge the UK government to ensure that victims; welfare is at the forefront of our policies and avenues of support.  Today, we remain hopeful that we, with our partners, will fight against harmful policies that do not bring justice for victims of slavery and trafficking in the Illegal Migration Act. #antislaveryday #illegalmigrationact #humanrights #slavery #trafficking

🗣 **Racial Profiling and Discrimination in Texas: A Call for Justice** The upcoming implementation of SB 4 in Texas has cast a dark shadow over the Latino community, allowing undue authority to police officers to question immigration status based solely on appearance. Let's talk about the reality of this law: it's a direct assault on the Latino population, using racial stereotypes as a tool for discrimination. Ask yourself, what does "undocumented" look like? The purpose of SB 4 seems clear—to discriminate against Latinos. However, recent news highlights individuals from various backgrounds crossing the Mexico/Texas border(China, India, Middle East and more), challenging the narrow narrative. Is Governor Greg Abbott implying that all races crossing this border will face scrutiny? This modern-day racism violates the fundamental rights guaranteed by the 5th Amendment of the US Constitution—protection against unlawful search and seizure. It's a stark example of racial profiling at its worst. Yes, border security is a concern, but should it be achieved through targeting those who don't fit a preconceived image of "American"? Let's not forget history—this land was taken from Native Americans. And yet, they, too, might face profiling because they don't fit the arbitrary skin color criteria. We must address border security sensibly, without resorting to discrimination against any group. At least 142 cases of sexual violence against women and girls have been reported in Darfur, according to a report by the African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies. The majority of the victims were internally displaced women and girls aged 12 to 40. In some cases, the victims were raped by armed men in military uniforms. During armed conflicts anywhere in the world there is always a surge in gender-based violence. There is an international legal framework to hold violent perpetrators accountable for this violence, but It must be accompanied by increased attention from our global community and officials who hold authority or influence in conflict interventions. #endviolenceagainstwomen https://lnkd.in/gBqa4BhE

Escalating concerns over the lives of minors threatened with death in #SaudiArabia (May 3, 2024 World Coalition Against the Death Penalty) https://lnkd.in/gC7AcvGV The undersigned organizations express their grave concern for the lives of minor defendants particularly the two young men, Yousif Al-Manasif and Ali Al-Mubaiouq, who are at imminent risk of execution in Saudi Arabia following confirmed information that the Specialized Criminal Court of Appeal (SCCA) has upheld their death sentences. Their cases were therefore referred to the Supreme Court which will render a final judgment. Approximately a year ago, the Supreme Court upheld final death sentences against Ali al-Subaiti. In addition, final death sentences had been approved by the Supreme Court about a year ago for both Abdullah Al-Derazi and Jalal Al-Labad. The Supreme Court is considered the final judicial stage before execution, which occurs after the king’s signature. (...) Tribal Sovereignty is a crucial principle that should be upheld and the long complicated history here is terrible and inspiring. Legally there are limits, some of which reflect racist and colonialist impositions but there are other duties, that lie in human rights that tribal nations owe as sovereigns. This case I think lies in that place, where even as tribal nations must be sovereign and independent, they also have international human rights obligations on civil, economic and social rights, at a minimum those that are mandatory customary law, jus cogens. In fact, abiding by such rules bolsters claims by nations rather than undermines them. I think it’s unfortunate that the case relies so much on treaty compliance given how much the US has violated these treaties will nilly. That said, tribal giver have historically based broader claims against the US on such treaties and so they can cut both ways. I speak to this as a black man and an outsider and with the limitations of someone who works on the periphery of these issues. I DO believe that they should be resolved under tribal law and constitutions and I hope we see more tribal courts do this.
