Each status has it’s own set of unique mandates to qualify and have a salary minimum associated with those exemption statuses. Anyone else feel that job listings should have a comments section? I swear companies are getting absurd in their requirements… Just viewed an opening for an Executive Admin… On-site - strike one (if you aren’t even offering 3+ days Remote, you don’t care about your people) Typical EA functions - 👍🏼 AP & AR functions - strike 2 (that’s a 2nd and 3rd job…and separation of the two functions is considered a fundamental accounting principle 🤔) Finance & Tax functions - strike 3 (that’s a 4th job) First of all, how dare you! Are your executives working 3-4 jobs? Because I’m sure their salaries are commensurate to that effect!!! Don’t let companies steamroll you into burnout. This is only one example of a “Dumpster Fire” company. Get your act together or PAY people for their efforts!

🤔 Do I really need a HR consultant if I’ve got an accountant? The answer is YES! I’ve been working with a client in the fitness space. They asked me to do a payroll audit and to make sure that their employment contracts were up to scratch, and that they were also compliant with the relevant Awards and employment conditions. 🔍What I found was that some of the permanent part time staff were not being paid annual leave. When I asked the owner of the business, were they aware of that? They said, yes. They said their Accountant had advised them to make a written agreement with the employees that they wouldn’t be paid for annual leave, so they could save on some money. 😳🤦♀️ Unfortunately, this is not the case. If you’ve got employees who are clearly paid under an Award condition, and they’re clearly permanent employees, then they do need to be paid annual leave, and you can’t withhold that even if you have it in writing. ✍️ And while the Accountant was doing their best to advise their client and trying to help them, they were actually going against the legislation and illegally withholding monies from employees, which could end up in reputational damage, not to mention Fair Work complaint. 😱 💼 Are you confident in your payroll and employment practices? I wanted to quickly shoutout my fellow HR, Payroll/Accounting people out there - former and current colleagues, friends, family, and anyone else who has ever worked in these types of departments. I see you and what you do matters! Many times these groups are looked down upon, feared, accused of “doing nothing all day” since we are not the ones making money for a company; we are not manufacturing products, or packaging items, or making sales, etc. But there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that most don’t see - important stuff like making sure everyone gets paid on time and correctly, making sure healthcare is taken care of by setting up,adjusting, assisting with benefits, making sure we are in compliance with many complicated and various laws and regulations. We are working hard to help our teams hire the right people in the right positions. We are advocates of growth and development. We are trying to create a culture that thrives on efficiency and even fun. We are keeping things flowing in the background so that employees are able to do what they do best. We are problem solvers, the unofficial therapists, peacemakers, career planners. Sometimes these feel like thankless jobs, but we keep going. I hope you are ready for this… Leaders! This new rule is going to impact so many of your employees. How do I know? In 2016, in partnership with HR and leadership, I led a major job analysis and change management initiative to ensure our organization was in compliance with this requirement the 1st time this law was proposed. We were very successful in our efforts. But ultimately this ruling didn’t pass under the Obama Administration. However, it looks like it will pass this time under President Biden. This is going to have a major effect on how you lead and who you are leading.
