When I came across this quote on instagram one day (in between the baby donkey videos), I nearly threw a bag of crisps at my phone. For myself and so many women I know (especially in Australia) this couldn’t be more true. ‘Merit’ for men is made up of some experience and a good dose of potential, but for women, past performance is often the only thing that does the trick. I once got referred for a job by a former colleague. It was well within my capabilities, at exactly the right pay and seniority range, and I was the recruiter’s favourite candidate. After 2 interviews (which I know I nailed), I was told I’d come second because “I hadn’t done the exact job before”. Well no shit Sherlock, you knew that from looking at my CV, so why waste my time? I remember attending an International Women’s Day Event in the UK about 7 or 8 years ago. A very senior man from the Crossrail project spoke at it, and lamented the lack of women in his leadership team. The story went: “For my operational leader, I needed someone that had run a metro line before, and there were no women that had done that” etc etc. I put my hand up and asked “all of the men in your leadership positions were given the opportunity to step up and lead something for the first time, if we don’t give women those same opportunities, how will we ever change the profile of leadership?” In a panel full of women, on international women’s day, this senior man grabbed the mic and said “this is a critical time for Crossrail, now is not the time for an experiment”. So there you have it. I want you to look around at your Boards, your leadership teams, hell your middle management tier. How many women do you have? If the answer is a dismal amount, don’t you dare utter the word “merit”, instead call a crisis meeting and have a long hard think about your view of prowess and potential. Sales Leader at Abbott | Human-Centric Leader | Writer | Speaker | Coach | Finding & sharing the meaning of life through leadership
Men apply for jobs when they meet 60% of the qualifications, but women only if they meet 100%. Hewlett-Packard reported a crucial gap in how genders view career development. While this is a small study, it reflects broader trends. Women hold about 33% of the leadership positions in the UK, according to the ONS. Although there has been some progress, women are still significantly underrepresented. This impacts: - Role models - Diversity of thought - Reflections of the workforce/customers How can we close the gap? Let's discuss this. 1. How can workplaces be more inclusive? 2. What steps ensure fair career growth? 3. How can leaders support taking risks? Executive Client Growth and Success Lead with BossmakeHer | Career Advancement for Women | Helping Director to C-suite Make Powerful Career Moves with Lasting Impact
One of the many reasons executive women choose to have a conversation with me is the promise of promotions, pay increases, or better benefits. However, often they find themselves stuck in a cycle where achieving laid-out steps only leads to the "carrot" being moved further away. It's common to see this cycle, especially among women, people of color, and different nationalities striving for senior leadership roles. Direct supervisors can block paths for growth, favoring others who resemble themselves but may be less qualified. If you're undervalued and taken advantage of, why stay? Your career growth matters, and you deserve to be valued and supported. Don't let anyone hinder your progress. You've worked hard to get where you are, and your goals are worth pursuing. For more insights on this issue, check out this article shedding light on the statistics and reality in the workforce: https://lnkd.in/eZSUrdUV Ladies facing these challenges in executive roles, BossmakeHer can assist you. I'm proud, but not surprised, to see Send feature in the Top 20 of all three Autumn Hiring Leaders Awards by cord: #4 in Fastest to Respond for Mid-Sized Companies (7hr 33m average) ⏰ #14 in Gender Diversity Sourcing for Mid-Sized Companies (50% above average) ⚖️ #18 in Most Responsive for Mid-Sized Companies (98.9% responsiveness) 👋 It's a great achievement and one that makes me smile, especially given the state of hiring generally at the moment. But the reason I'm proud, yet not surprised, is because I know what happens behind the scenes. Send is a one-person Talent team - Liam. He owns all of our recruitment outreach, process, delivery and onboarding. In addition to 200 or so applications we've had through Cord over the past 3 months, we've had another 3,000 applications across all channels plus all of the outreach work he does. And the metrics are basically the same: ⏰ Average time in stage of our last 3,000 candidates has been 2 days (including application stage); 🗓️ Average Time to Fill of 26 days 💜 Average candidate satisfaction score of 87% 🎉 Average acceptance rate of 94% 🚀 ...And he also built a new Public Handbook (https://lnkd.in/eUbQ4U6T) and a new Send Onboarding Plan. After seeing these sort of results every month from Liam, they almost become 'normal', which is why I'm proud to see the work he puts in every day and his passion for candidate experience come up in all three of Cord's Hiring Leader award lists. Liam - you're smashing it, and we're so fortunate to have you at Send leading our recruitment! 👏👏👏
