“Every military service, in nearly every combatant command, is experimenting with uncrewed, autonomous systems for land, air, sea and undersea combat. What’s finally driving change is the brutal lesson of the war in Ukraine. This is a drone and satellite war: Russian and Ukrainian tanks are almost defenseless against attacks from drones overhead. Russia’s huge Navy has lost control of the Black Sea because of Ukrainian naval drones; satellites can feed precise targeting information to kill anything that algorithms designate as a weapon. But there’s a catch: The Ukraine battlefield is a blizzard of electronic warfare. So systems must be truly autonomous, able to operate without GPS or other external guidance.” #TheMissionStartsHere #AI #DroneWarfare #IW https://lnkd.in/gTTRr9sM

I’ve argued for drones and missiles in the past. I continue to do so, and for the lessons that Ukraine is providing to be operationalised in medium and small country militaries (like Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand) to compensate for our lack of human-power resources. We cannot afford expensive, heavily-crewed, complex systems. We need to deliver greater numbers of missiles and drones (sea, undersea, land and air) to create defence forces that are truely capable of credible defence. What has Australia done? Gone and committed billions and billions for subs it may never see and for surface ships that may never be safe beyond their berths. We continue to prepare for the last war, not the next.

David Ignatius notes in this opinion piece that the ongoing war in Ukraine is driving a shift in the US towards more agile, technology-driven defense strategies, signaling a long-overdue transformation in military procurement and deployment in which innovation by Ukrainians in defense technology is likely to play a large role. As Mr. Ignatius writes: "What’s finally driving change is the brutal lesson of the war in Ukraine. This is a drone and satellite war: Russian and Ukrainian tanks are almost defenseless against attacks from drones overhead; Russia’s huge Navy has lost control of the Black Sea because of Ukrainian naval drones; satellites can feed precise targeting information to kill anything that algorithms designate as a weapon. But there’s a catch: The Ukraine battlefield is a blizzard of electronic warfare. So systems must be truly autonomous, able to operate without GPS or other external guidance, as I described in a recent account from Kyiv of technology developed by the software company Palantir. In makeshift weapons factories in Kyiv, and in defense labs around the United States, designers are creating systems with artificial intelligence at “the edge,” embedded in the weapons themselves, so they don’t have to depend on jammable signals from space." https://lnkd.in/dbMq4i2b

🔫 Shooting at drones, the ability to disguise themselves from them, battles in the trenches: what's new in the training of the mobilized. The war made adjustments to the course of basic combined military training. On the battlefield, the enemy is now actively using FPV drones, so more and more often our soldiers have to fight directly in the trenches. 🔫 How recruits are being prepared for the ranks of the Armed Forces today in view of this - in the ArmiyaInform report .

Drones are transforming warfare. Over the past decade, uncrewed aerial vehicles—and recently naval vessels—have put increasingly lethal and effective military equipment in the hands of insurgent groups. The question for the U.S. and its allies now is how to defend against cheap drones without using expensive missiles. Here’s a look at some of the ways drones are reshaping warfare. https://lnkd.in/eS_bXxH7
