Although this seems to be a good use of technology, my wish is it is for peace. Not peace through war. But peace directly. The U.S. Air Force announced on Tuesday its latest initiative to unleash the power of “digital twins”—computerized simulators that mimic real-world systems with almost perfect accuracy. This bold effort, dubbed Model One, integrates 50 top military simulations into a unified system to adapt to the ever-evolving landscape of digital warfare. As the conflict in Ukraine underscores, the blistering speed of software and data, not industrial-era hardware, now drives the battlefield cadence. The U.S. military can’t currently simulate, much less master, such interconnected hyperwar.

The U.S. Defense Department years ago identified AI as a game-changer; the technology, officials say, can quickly parse otherwise overwhelming amounts of information, augment a commander’s decision-making process, and help reallocate precious manpower. The department in fiscal 2024 requested $1.8 billion for AI while juggling hundreds of related projects, including some tied to major weapons systems. AI is also a critical piece of the Defense Department’s Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control concept. By jointly developing AI and its underlying infrastructure, the U.K. Ministry of Defence said, the militaries can figure out interoperability now, and not later, when bullets are flying, while also reducing costs. “Accelerating technological advances will deliver the operational advantages necessary to defeat current and future threats across the battlespace,” Lt. Gen. Rob Magowan, the U.K. deputy chief of defense staff for military capability, said. “We are committed to collaborating with partners to ensure that we achieve this while also promoting the responsible development and deployment of AI.” See https://lnkd.in/gKdkHYua

While I think digital twins are a good idea for early research and development, it is CRITICAL to remember that for any system with embedded artificial intelligence, digital twins will not be sufficient for testing systems expected to operate in the real world. Such systems should NEVER be allowed to be certified for operations based only on simulated data.

“Despite the hype surrounding it, AI will not transform U.S. military operations without similar intellectual and organizational growing pains.” This is an interesting thought piece by Owen J. Daniels, researcher at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, exploring the revolutions in military affairs framework to better understand how intellectual innovations fundamentally disrupt patterns of military operations.
