The battles of Fallujah in 2004 highlight the challenges of urban warfare and the need for strategic patience, planning, and adaptability. These battles demonstrate the importance of not only winning the war but also winning the peace in modern warfare. When trying to establish control over a population in an urban setting, it is crucial to focus on building trust and protecting civilians. The conflict provides an opportunity to apply these lessons and turn tactical victories into long-term strategic success. Embracing a strategy that prioritizes civilian protection and trust-building is essential for achieving lasting peace. For those involved in defense innovation and working in AI, urban warfare is particularly relevant. The complexities of urban environments present unique challenges that require innovative solutions and the use of advanced technologies. AI can play a crucial role in enhancing situational awareness, decision-making, and the protection of civilians in urban combat scenarios. By leveraging AI capabilities, military forces can improve their effectiveness, reduce civilian casualties, and ultimately achieve their objectives more efficiently. Urban warfare serves as a fruitful ground for using cutting-edge technologies and tactics, making it a key focus for those interested in defense innovation and AI development. #TheMissionStartsHere #AI #urbanwarfare https://lnkd.in/eEMpUds4

Interesting and challenging journalistic piece from the Telegraph. The Eastern Front and Ukraine War is not really my field of expertise. However all the themes here, of underestimating your enemy, adapting and overcoming, adapting or repurposing elementary tech, the fruits of upskilling and training etc -are exactly those I've tried to share in videos from the ongoing Gaza War. I also like the way it's delivered, as massimo m and I always try to, without valorisation or praise but also a frank assessment of the enemy. As stated here, it is dangerous to assume the Russian Army is a tactically ignorant mass led entirely by incompetents, lacking finesse and herding illiterate soldiers into a meat-grinder of hungry gun muzzles (just as it was dangerous to write off Palestinian groups with infantile jokes and references to the 'Team America' puppet film) Peter David Smethers MIExpE MIABTI John Mansour Hatem Kareem Heba Moumtaz Koketjo Kgofelo Martin Ormston Omar A. CEO and Principal Researcher, Non-Apocalyptic Evidence-Based Preparedness Education for Rational People
Militaries consistently expend remarkable efforts in building an operational picture, a common knowledge base of the ground - terrain, weather, people, culture, economics and societal factors before they conduct operations. Ground dictates everything - know it before and you're well ahead, ignore it at your peril. Whether it is finding trusted pathways upon which to send preparedness information or to pose questions to understand the needs of society, mapping the relationships and sectors / elements of society are key enablers significantly under-utilized in emergency management. There is no one in the public sector who should know more about the community than the emergency manager.
