I’m 57 years old and had been working at the same company for almost 20 years. I have no idea how to start over again and find a new job. I’m worried about facing ageism in the hiring process. I’m also considering whether to pivot to a different career path (I was good at my job, but I didn’t love it). How do I figure out what my next steps should be?

If you're applying for a job, you're already too late And this is even more evident for internal transitions Most senior career transitions happen because of who you know, not where you applied This isn't about being shady or going under the table. It's about being informed, prepared and just plain practical. You should be the one they think of when they are preparing a job description. When your name comes up, people should nod and seem to say "Of course, that's the right person for the job" Most senior roles are filled even before they get posted for the public. Not that they have formally selected someone already, but a certain someone has filled their mind space. And the rest of the process is about confirming that choice, or not. Reach out. Talk to people. Ask around. Get on their radar. When a role comes up, the first person they should call is you. #coachshyam

Here's a good HBR article about a few questions you should ask yourself before changing careers. While it's pitched at people from corporate backgrounds, the central points here carry over to those transitioning out of academia. Our favourite tip here is about 'testing your hypothesis'. The article gives the example of shadowing someone for a day, and while this is a great option if it's not possible we suggest doing informational interviews with people in the field or roles that you're looking into. A couple of other options are watching 'a day in the life of...' videos (which will tend to lean positive), or reading forums or subreddits dedicated to the field (these will lean negative). Taken with a grain of salt, these can help you get a sense of what a field is truly like. https://lnkd.in/esgXzkDn
