Nearing the end of Q1 and I can comfortably say WOW. Across both businesses: Revenue: up Leads: up Ad bookings: up Targets: knocked out the park New clients: up New products launched: tick How have we done it? 👀 For WCS Agency - A direct correlation to the amount of face time and relationship building we’ve done over the last 3 months showcasing our value and ability to problem solve for clients. For Cardiff Life - Social strategy was implemented and we cruised from 15k > 30k followers in 4 months. We’ve had 2 special editions, Black History Month and IWD and I can say single handedly these two publications have been springboards for our success. It isn’t easy tackling the topics and conversations that are tough and sometimes uncomfortable but we have to use this platform for good and it seems to be paying off. The team have been mega, you know who you are and how grateful I am for your hard work! 🫶 Q2, - the same but bigger, better and hopefully brighter weather (pretty please, universe) 😵💫☀️

The movie “The Greatest Showman,” Hugh Jackman, playing P.T. Barnum, explores Barnum’s journey from a poor kid, to founding the Barnum and Bailey Circus during the 19th century. Barnum considered himself a showman, he wanted to bring smiles to children and make people feel a great sense of happiness after watching his performance. He was always selling his shows by using his captivating style with outlandish promises. David Ogilvy was also in sales, although his style was far different than Barnum’s. Ogilvy was selling someone else’s product. His messaging to the consumer had to be believable, so he never used celebrities to help sell any product. The consumer might like the celebrity, but that doesn’t make them believable. Ogilvy and Barnum were both salesmen with different styles. Barnum the promoter, Ogilvy the truth teller. Both were able to use their skills to enhance the second of four criteria of leadership: Management of Meaning. This is a critical area as the leader becomes a salesperson, selling their ideas using a unique approach to allow their followers to understand their vision. Management of Meaning when done correctly creates alignment within the organization. When a leader uses the P.T. Barnum approach of promoting to sell their ideas, without connecting everyone to the vision, the runway towards success is short. Eventually those following will see the shallowness of the sales approach, will believe the leader is more about making themselves successful, than the entire group. Promoters promote themselves. Don’t promote when selling your vision. Connect your vision to those you lead. Be Ogilvy, not Barnum.

Can David still beat Goliath? I spent most of my corporate life working on brand and product development with “Goliaths” in beauty. I took the conscious decision to step outside of that when I went solo, focusing on the power of words to tell stories for much smaller businesses. In the last five years, I’ve only been tempted back into brand creation and product development on less than a handful of occasions. Working with Jonathan and Antonia and the team at Nursem is one of them. It has everything I love in smaller brands: incredible people, great heart, amazing products that work, and a story worth telling. Thousands of nurses around the UK and beyond have received Nursem Promise packs from every purchase. It was also a chance to work with Paul Tomlinson again after many years working together on No 7. We all worked on Ultra Caring Body Balm, which India Knight described as “a dream on super-dry skin”. Not going to disagree with her. Still got that little rush of excitement of seeing something I’d been involved with in the press and on the shelf. So now this little David of a product needs some help. It’s nominated, along with the incredible hand cream, in the Style Beauty Awards. It’s up against brands such as Nivea, Dove, and Dermalogica. Definitely Goliaths in comparison. All great products, but I challenge you to find one with more heart behind it. I know they’d love you to try the product yourself.
