New recovery boiler concept: ultra-low emissions, maximum energy efficiency As part of its CircleToZero initiative to reduce emissions and waste at pulp mills, ANDRITZ never stops innovating to obtain maximum results. One of the latest developments for pulp mills has resulted in a new recovery boiler concept with low emissions while maintaining high energy efficiency at the same time. The recovery boiler has come a long way since it was first invented in the early 1930s. At the time it was a revolution and is now often described as the “beating heart of a pulp mill”, as it performs its duty of recovering the inorganic chemicals, burning organic chemicals so they are not discharged from the mill as pollutants, and recovering heat in the form of steam to generate power. Over the years, that first revolutionary recovery boiler design has developed and evolved into a showcase of sustainability for all pulp mills around the world. Revolutionary #startup H2 Green Steel has developed a first-of-its-kind green steel production method eliminating 98% of carbon emissions. Their technology utilizes renewable energy to generate #greenhydrogen for iron ore reduction rather than carbon-intensive coking coal. The resulting steel carries a #netzero carbon footprint at cost parity to traditional production. Once their commercial scale plant opens in northern #Sweden this year, they aim to produce 5 million tons annually of the world's first clean sheet and bar steel. Continuing our exploration of HTW® gasification technology, we highlight the remarkable benefits of using pelletized waste feedstock. This method not only enhances the efficiency and reliability of our gasifiers but also reinforces our commitment to sustainable and innovative energy solutions. 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 & 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞: Pelletized feedstock increases bulk density, enabling our plants to achieve higher capacity with less volume. For example, pelletized RDF/SRF material sees a density increase from 100kg/m³ to 450-500kg/m³, while wood pellets rise from 250kg/m³ to 700-800kg/m³. This leads to more efficient solid handling and up to five times more throughput for RDF/SRF and up to three times for wood waste. 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰��𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Pellets are easier to handle than powder materials, reducing blockages and downtime. This ensures smoother and more reliable plant operations. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰: Using pelletized feedstock ensures consistent feeding, minimizing flow-related issues and enhancing production consistency and availability. 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Pellets are less sensitive to variations in material type, allowing for a flexible design of the solid handling system that accommodates a wide range of feedstocks. Gränges has invested $52 million to expand its recycling and casting operations in Huntingdon, Tennessee. This will enable a market launch of near-zero carbon aluminum solutions in 2024 to meet North America's growing demand for sustainable products. To produce near-zero carbon aluminum products, i.e. with a carbon footprint of a maximum 1 tonne CO2e per tonne of aluminum, the new recycling and casting center will use the latest technology in induction melting furnaces combined with all-electric annealing ovens.
