SUBCULTURES offers us a fascinating source of endless creative power. Far away from marketing restrictive questions like “what do people want?” Subcultures deliver a far wider spectrum of views and ideas without mental boundaries. The goal to touch a human being emotionally is the same like in the theme park business. I get it, especially when there are millions of dollars involved, we tend to play it safe and logical in order to deliver an attractions that appeals to million guests emotionally in the best way possible. Thats why we mostly come back to adventurous or explorer themes like pirates, mayas, tiki, steampunk or general IP´s the marketing department dictates to us. But this safety can be illusionary. Like Joe Rhode said and I quote: “The danger is that repetitive expressions of the same initial idea slowly drain even the initial creative product of its power!” The energy of a rave, the cross-border creativity and freedom of drag shows, the power of rock`n`roll and the crazyness of punk and so on and so on can be a powerful expansion of your initial Idea. Every Artform can expand your mind. Sometimes subcultures get a push into the mainstream like the Aerosmith Rock`n`Rollercoaster or the Ride of Happiness Tomorrowland in Plopsaland. Mostly this unique energy, spirit and power of subcultures are a sign of a intense sense of life. This value gets mostly lost in the mainstream world because of restrictions and the alignment of Ideas. Nevertheless I would love to see more of new and unique theming out there, which are possibly more attractive to a new generation of Theme Park Visitors. We should ask ourselves if we risk boring our guests with always the same theming like 19th century brick walls or do we aim to deliver something that expands their horizon and excites their minds. Could we miss the chance to touch their souls. Be fearless and fierce #themepark #themeparkdesign #culture #ideas #horizon #expansion #design #designdevelopment #subculture #phenomenon

Today we recap on "What is wayfinding?". Part 2/7 – Place What is “place” in wayfinding Place is communicated through the language of objects and space. Wayfinding helps us confirm our natural understanding of our environment. It makes clear our bearings and reveals destinations. Naming combined with the ‘legibility’ of a place is the basis of understanding and remembering a location. #wayfinding #wayfindingdesign #wayfindingsignage #builtenvironment #architecturedesign https://lnkd.in/gZpdzaJ2

Elements required for making art: 1) space 2) time 3) purpose? 1)To an extent space can be carved from anywhere (kitchen table) but it is helpful to have your own and more helpful to have a decent bit of it (own studio). More helpful again if the space is enjoyable to be in and has enough room to do the work you want to do. If you don’t have your own dedicated space, you need to set up and set down which eats into the time you have to do it and probably leads to not making it. 2) It takes time to make it and time to get good at it. Getting the balance of how much time you dedicate to creativity and how much you to dedicate to facilitating the comfort of your life is tricky. 3) Once you have the time and space to create, you enter the great overwhelming expanse of being able to do anything and grappling with the point and purpose.

Better Cities Film Festival and PlacemakingX Announce Joint 10th Anniversary Even in Downtown Detroit #BetterCitiesFilmFestival and #PlacemakingX announce a special screening of the feature documentary “#ThePlaceMan” as part of a joint 10th anniversary celebration to be held at #CampusMartius in #downtownDetroit, on October 5th, 2023. The event is co-hosted by the Downtown Detroit Partnership. The Place Man (2023), directed by Guillermo Bernal, explores the roots of the placemaking movement through the life of Fred Kent, one of the co-founders of PlacemakingX, who has devoted his life to creating #publicspaces for people. Originally launched in Detroit in 2013, the #placemaking movement, now led by PlacemakingX, has expanded globally, with 33 regional and national placemaking networks. "Given Detroit is the city where we first gathered placemaking leaders to launch a movement, we’re thrilled to mark our 10th anniversary by collaborating with the Downtown Detroit Partnership and Better Cities Film Festival to present the film “The Place Man,” which is really the origin story of the global placemaking movement” said Ethan Kent, Executive Director of PlacemakingX, and son of Fred Kent. Fred Kent, Steve Davies, #KathyMadden, and other founders and leaders of the global placemaking movement are attending the anniversary celebration. "Making 'The Place Man' has been a transformative experience. This is not just a film about public spaces but a story about human connection, community, and the vision one man had to make the world a more inclusive and vibrant place," says Guillermo Bernal. Echoing the film's themes, the director emphasizes that Fred Kent's life mission resonates with all who recognize the role of 'place' in their lives. The film aims to catalyze a new generation of urban planners and architects and finds its perfect launch pad in Detroit—a city embodying the spirit of renewal and community. After the Q&A, attendees will have an exclusive chance to meet Guillermo Bernal and Fred Kent in person, offering a window into the minds behind this compelling film. Full press release: https://lnkd.in/e5Ay7wuF Thank you to Chris Elisara, John Paget, and David Cowan for making this happen, and to festival partners The Congress for the New Urbanism, PlacemakingUS, Michigan CNU, Pontiac Holonomy Incubator / PHINCO, Social Life Project, Windsor Region Society of Architects, The Siren Hotel and many more. Tickets for other Better Cities Film Festival screenings are available at https://lnkd.in/ee65ts2k. The full schedule for Better Cities Film Festival is available at: https://lnkd.in/eW77K5DR. Festival passes are available to purchase online in advance as single screening tickets or all-access passes. Tickets will also be available at the door

I decided to do some upgrading to the Coming Attractions area. Some things seemed off. So, I wanted to reboot this a little bit. The reason is for positioning. My past few screens were excellent for content, but the area felt stagnant/rigid/inflexible. The solution was to make a screen in the same design as I did for the holidays but put the words "Coming Attractions" next to the Fest Project logo. It gives the flexibility to have an announcement screen in one area and nearby/next to it a "Coming Attractions Screen." Now, onto the content. Those who saw Friday's post know I'm not a fan of the winter weather. Having two storms was enough. So, I decided to reboot December's exhibits, and I won't be creating any more "Winter Wonderland" exhibits. December's "Pastel Wonderland: A Dreamy Escape" exhibit will have visitors immersing themselves in the world of pastel colors. I have some cool things in the works with this one. The teaser screen features some Powder and Bokeh brushwork that will be a feature in this exhibit. Throughout the year, you will see glimpses of this unique exhibit.
