I'm one of two admins for a local gifting group on Facebook where we focus on building community, reducing environmental waste, and helping each other out. Recently, we faced a tough situation. A small but vocal group of members became upset with our group rules (which are essential for maintaining order and a positive environment) and got nasty with fellow members and admins. Juggling nearly 3,000 members with just two admins was already challenging, and this negativity pushed us to a breaking point. We announced we were closing the group. Here's where things got real. Hundreds of messages poured in, begging us to reconsider. Single parents shared how the group helped them find baby formula during the shortages, or find clothes when they couldn't afford them. Newcomers said it was their lifeline to meet locals and make friends when they first moved to the area. This was a powerful reminder. What started as a simple giving platform became a vital community for thousands. While the specific context involves a local Facebook group, the core message translates to professional settings where we can often find ourselves juggling numerous responsibilities and facing challenges with limited resources. This experience highlights two crucial lessons: ✨ First, don't be afraid to persistently seek help. It's not a sign of weakness but rather a testament to our commitment to excellence and the well-being of those involved. By working together, we can achieve more than we could alone. ✨ Second, remember the profound impact a positive and supportive environment can have. This applies not only to online communities but also to our professional spaces. By fostering collaboration and mutual respect, we create a space where everyone can thrive.

Founder of Flexi Collective: a community for freelancers and remote workers. Sharing learnings on marketing and building meaningful businesses.
Who will you never ever work with? ❌ ❌ What's the purpose behind your community or business? Who it's meant for, and equally, who it's not meant for? Research shows people make decisions based on their self-image. If your community or business aligns with who they want to be (even if they're not quite there yet), they'll be more likely to get on board. "Don't Mess with Texas" - A Lesson in Identity Marketing 🐂 In the book "Made to Stick", Chip and Dan Heath explore how Texas once grappled with a significant litter problem, costing the state millions annually. Conventional anti-litter campaigns relied on emotional appeals like guilt and protecting wildlife, but they weren't reaching the right audience - the 18-35-year-old, sports-loving, authority-questioning crowd. To connect with them, Texas had to tap into their identity. Enter the "Don't Mess with Texas" campaign. It featured local athletes and musicians who resonated deeply with Texans' sense of identity. These celebrities embodied the ideal Texan, appealing to the masculine Texas identity. Over the first five years of the campaign, roadside litter decreased by a staggering 72%. The Takeaway? Knowing who you're targeting, aligning with their identity, and speaking to their aspirations can be the key to building a thriving community or business. Flexi Collective is not for people who: ❌ Don't want to meet new people and make connections. ❌ Have no interest in becoming part of a community. ❌ Want to work from home every single day. Flexi Collective is for freelancers and remote workers who want to: ✅ Be part of a co-working community. ✅ Meet new people and forge meaningful connections. ✅ Contribute to local communities by working from underutilised spaces. Let me know in the comments who you'll never work with 👇

What if the nearly 30 million businesses in America (which control $32 trillion dollars of wealth) were disproportionately owned by Baby Boomers who have, or are, aging out of their businesses? - Oh, that’s right, that’s exactly where we are. What if those Boomers, or more notably, their business were adrift in a sea of like businesses creating a buyers market and a sellers nightmare? - Oh, that’s right, that’s exactly what they are experiencing right now. What if those Boomers required the sale of their business to fund their retirement and for their trusted employees to have a job to keep going to? - Oh, that’s right, data has demonstrated that 92% of business owners require the sale of their business to fund 60-100% of their retirement and obviously, if a business can’t be sold and closes, those employees, those hard working Americans, are out on the street. What if you, and ONLY you, could do something about this and in the process get a massive piece of both the benefits that only we can create and participate in the $32 trillion dollar transition of wealth (the LARGEST IN HUMAN HISTORY!) https://lnkd.in/gMi7FE5v

Environment America is hiring campaign associates to work in locations across the country on our campaigns to defend our oceans and public lands, to advocate for clean energy solutions and to campaign for clean air and clean water. Here are some of the things our associates do: Work with coalitions to create shared campaign strategy and demonstrate support for our campaign goals. Organize events and work with volunteers: Organize webinars, community events and public meetings. Recruit organizations and members of the public to attend and participate. Earn traditional media and social media attention: Organize media events and write opinion pieces. Build a following on social media for your campaign. Lobby elected officials: Coordinate strategy with champions in Congress or in State Houses. Make a convincing case to legislators who are undecided on a particular vote. When a critical vote is happening on your campaign, work to demonstrate the support you’ve been building on the ground to help line up the votes needed to win. Recruit new people: Help build your team by recruiting volunteers, interns and full-time staff. Run a grassroots campaign office each summer to raise money to support our campaigns, build our organization and membership, and help build critical and timely grassroots support to win key campaigns while honing your organizing and management skills. This is an excellent way of increasing diversity on your board, add additional expertise and skills and also purposely enact succession planning. As a board you just need to be able to offer a constructive and supported learning experience for a less experienced governance professional. The applicants are of a very high calibre and if you have a recent skills matrix to hand that considers the next 18 months of strategic intent that can be part of the process. The IOD manage the process, present you with an award winning candidate and an independent mentor. What's not to love?
