My secondary school classmate (RI ‘90) is Head of the House at The George, George Town, Penang. The Head of the House is the general manager and master storyteller. How apt and well suited to Peter, who is a grandmaster extraordinaire in bringing to life the rich heritage of Penang - particularly resonant given the historied location. ****** We spent the evening talking about how to build a team with high Collective Intelligence. Assembling a team - housekeeping, F&B, front-office, marketing, engineering - with high Competencies is necessary but insufficient for #success. The Head of the House needs to encourage Cohesiveness of his people. And Coherence of its products, offerings and strategy. Only when a team can identify each others’ strengths, develop strategies to leverage these towards a shared purpose - will high collective intelligence be achieved. ****** So much for framework-gobbledygook 😃 Peter said: “I keep it simple, bro, it’s about Collaboration.” And he’s right. So many things that he does promotes #PsychologicalSafety - an important basis for learning, creativity and engendering the safe zone for improving on mistakes and failure. Monday won't be so gloomy if you believe that something good is always bound to happen. I have extended my current role as development opportunities in other finance function. Its giving me an opportunity to join the offsite 360 Collaboration session on Monday, with a refreshing change of environment. Start the session with bonding and team formation, with 5-6 persons per team. Get to know each other more, building connection and grow the professional relationship 🤝 We get together and begin the 2 hours Heritage Hunt journey surrounding Georgetown areas. My last participation in heritage hunt was 10 years ago. It is an effective activities in promotes collaboration, problem solving & time management. Being given a series of clues to reveal hidden beauty of Penang Heritage places, it is also build a strong bond among colleagues & peers. Walking under the heat of hot sun ☀️, sweat dripped from our faces, and we managed to hunt for the wanted streets arts or murals. After the hunt, we went back for lunch with some delicious local food and fusion dishes 😋 We continue the amazing day with indoor activities, spend quality time getting to know deeper about each other. The Sembang session is focused on listening, listen to one another and their life-stories, learn to express tough emotions and respect among each other. Key takeaways from this 360 Collaboration session, we know our colleagues and peers deeper, strengthen our work relationships to make our job more productive in future. What does what we eat over Chinese New Year have to do with good meeting facilitation? Over the start of the Year of the Dragon, I had a diversity of foods -- from Chinese steamboat to home-cooked Penang hokkien mi to my mum's famous tomato rice and chicken curry with cucumber salad. Yeah, I know 😋 😋 😋 Plus, I had my favourite cookies -- love letters and my sister-in-law's peanut cookies. This got me thinking about how much the diversity of foods I was enjoying over Chinese New Year lifted the quality of our gatherings. And in Malaysia, we often take it for granted that our palate will always enjoy such diversity. And I realised, while we can take diversity for granted in some spaces, we cannot always take that for granted when we meet formally at meetings where there can be binary, confirmation and other kinds of biases at play. These biases unfortunately limit the quality of our thinking and decision-making, without us even realising it. That's the thing about facilitating meetings. When I facilitate, I intentionally seek to create a space where group intelligence can benefit from a diversity of viewpoints and experiences. As I prepare to facilitate a meeting I ask myself, "What could I be doing to intentionally create space for diversity to happen naturally?", just like Malaysians regularly expect to experience diversity in our foods. The phrase "cross-functional collaboration" is commonplace in most commercial entities, often being the "buzzword/phrase" that is spewed ever so rampantly with the goal of rallying troops within organizations...but more often than not, backfires and instead becomes the butt of jokes within the grapevine. Eg. "Cross-functional my ass.. the top also not aligned, and they expect this cross-functional nonsense.." All too familiar? Repetition of catchphrases and buzzwords mean nothing without leaders walking the talk, without consciously embedding and implementing this in our day-to-day work lives. As cliche as it may sound, I am proud to say that here at Heineken Malaysia, we do not just call ourselves a One Strong Winning Team for the sake of portraying an illusionary positive culture. Here at Heineken Malaysia, we truly embrace differences, champion authenticity and come together as a united entity, focused on common goals; Winning vs the Competition and Brewing the Joy of True Togetherness. 🚀 Unlocking the Power of Collaboration: A Personal Journey 🌟 Hello LinkedIn community, I hope this post finds you all well and thriving! Today, I want to share a personal story that underscores the incredible potential of collaboration and how it can lead to transformative outcomes. Yesterday, I was invited by a group of friends to visit the Jom Heboh event located next to Johor Bahru Angsana Mall. My friend told me that one particular booth had a beautiful display, and we should see it in person. I was skeptical at first, as the booth sells local beauty products. Our main intention in visiting Jom Heboh was to buy food and meet up with another friend. We already warned each other not to buy any unnecessary products. Once we entered the beauty booth, three of us were attended by a different beauty advisor. I've heard of this beauty brand since 2018 but was not tempted to purchase it as it does not have a physical sample that I can try on. After a 15-minute conversation with the sales advisor, I caved in and went home with five products. Here are some key takeaways from this experience that I'd like to share: 1. The sales advisor was helpful and attentive; she quickly introduced herself and informed me of the latest product. She was so enthusiastic in demonstrating the application of the product that I could not push her away. 2. Share her experience using the product; she showed a photo of before and after using the product, and the result was impressive. Not only that, she also shared her contact number in case I need help with how to use the product correctly. 3. Selling relevant products; each of my friends purchased different products suited to their needs. 4. Teamwork makes the dream work; each sales advisor(SA) helps each other and delegates their roles carefully, assigning one SA to one customer. From there, I found out that the sales advisor came from the same hometown as the owner of the beauty product. It amazes me how a simple collaboration can open many beautiful opportunities. 9-10 March 2024 | Avillion Resort PD My last team building before the Ramadhan period was for BonCafé 🤎 I love this as a finale because this is such an inspiring organization. Their bond transcends organisational structure. They’re more like a family of different races, function and from different location across Malaysia. Many team members have been with the organization for 10-20 years. It’s not uncommon for employees to have started as Technicians to become Branch Managers taking care of regions like East Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak), North Peninsula (Penang & upwards), Klang Valley Southward & Eastward. To be honest, team building is just a springboard that propels change. More significantly is what drives from the top. That sets the tone of how things should be run. I think I know that very well having been in the corporate world for more than 2 decades. In this company, that is more plausible than most. This is my 2nd time leading the team building for BonCafé. Last year we did it in Sunway Lagoon.
