Recently, I've had the opportunity to interview several candidates who have been affected by layoffs. More often than not, they try to justify that they weren’t bad performers, but they were laid off. Out of curiosity, I asked why they felt the need to justify themselves further. They shared that sometimes they feel judged by questions from recruiters or hiring managers about why they were selected for the layoff. Whether it's a case of self-doubt or insensitivity from the hiring team, it's important for us to set the record straight. Having been involved in delivering retrenchment and also having been at the receiving end of retrenchment, I can confidently say that, in most cases, performance is never a consideration. I've seen top performers, and even someone who just joined a week ago, be part of the layoff list. Layoffs are often the result of larger strategic decisions that have little to do with individual performance. As recruiters and hiring managers, we need to approach these conversations with empathy and understanding. It's crucial to create a safe space for candidates to share their experiences without feeling judged or inadequate. To all candidates affected by layoffs: your worth is not defined by these circumstances. Now we are moving from "mass layoffs" to "small and steady job cuts".... Whilst it appears that the layoffs are "slowing down"... let's talk about the effects of these "small and steady job cuts". Here are some things that we see over and over in our coaching sessions with people who have been laid off: 𝐄𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒏𝒙𝒊𝒆𝒕𝒚: Worries about financial stability, future employment, and providing for oneself or one's family can be overwhelming. 𝑳𝒐𝒔𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒚: For many people, their job is closely tied to their identity and self-worth. Losing a job can lead to a sense of loss of identity and purpose, impacting self-esteem. 𝑭𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑼𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒚: The fear of the unknown can be a major source of anxiety for those who have been laid off. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝑰𝒏𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒔𝒔: This can create financial strain, making it challenging to meet daily expenses, pay bills, and cover essential needs. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝑱𝒐𝒃 𝑺𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝑫𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒚: Finding a new job can be a time-consuming and challenging process. Increased competition for available positions can extend the period of unemployment. 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝒆𝒕𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌: A layoff can disrupt a person's career trajectory, leading to a temporary or even permanent setback in terms of job title, responsibilities, and salary. 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥-𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝑷𝒉𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉: The stress associated with job loss can manifest in physical health issues, such as sleep disturbances, headaches, and other stress-related symptoms. 𝑴𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉: Layoffs are often linked to mental health challenges, including depression and feelings of inadequacy. The impact on mental health can be significant and may require professional support. 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔: Job loss can strain relationships with family and friends, particularly if there are financial pressures or changes in lifestyle. 𝑺𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑰𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 The social aspect of work provides a sense of community and belonging. Losing a job can lead to social isolation as individuals may withdraw from social activities.
