Planning on sleeping in this weekend? There’s no need to feel guilty about it. A recent consensus statement from the National Sleep Foundation (PMID: 37684151) has reinforced the importance of regular sleep and wake time. The rigorous review of 63 scientific publications found that regular sleep schedules were associated with several benefits, including improved: -Alertness -Health and safety behaviours -Cardiovascular health -Metabolic health -Inflammation -Mental health -Academic performance -Cognitive performance -Sleep duration -Sleep quality In contrast, social jetlag (the number one source of sleep timing variability) was associated with worse health outcomes. But what if you don’t get to sleep enough during the week? The consensus statement is clear that people should try to maintain a regular sleep schedule to the extent it's feasible.
