Yes these Planning & Review meets which have become a regular event in the Expenzing calendar, give cross functional visibility to everyone on how all of us are pulling in the same direction, and how what others are doing adds to waht one is doing. For me I have 2 simple measure of how effective such a meeting has been - 1. The Energy levels of the people during & post event, 2. What do people who are attending their first planning meet have to say about it. On both those counts, this meeting was excellent & fulfilling

Making a GREAT team takes time and dedication. Not just one person can take care of everything but when your whole team can support each other, that’s when you can grow together. Example: When your team can come together, sharing their strengths and weaknesses. Come up with a strategy on how you can be successful together by using each other’s strengths and weaknesses, there isn’t ANYTHING that can stop you!

WHAT VALUE DO YOU PUT ON TEAMWORK? In an era where more people work flexibly and remotely and staff changes happen just about as often as a new moon, it's a good ideas to ask what value do you put on teamwork. Having goals, structures and systems are one thing but is your team aligned to each other to get to where they are going? Or are they flying solo and hoping for the best. We know that teams are way more likely to succeed if they're great at teamwork and to be great at anything you need to practice it, review it, reflect on it and try it again. It doesn't happen by accident or default. It needs to be worked on.

YOU HAVE TO BRING THE BEST IN YOUR TEAM On one occasion, I was frustrated with the performance of one team member, as he was doing less work than his colleagues, which ended up burdening the entire group. My boss at that time told me: 'You have to make it work!' That challenge made me think about each team member's strengths. I realized that it wasn't best for everyone to do the same thing (as had always been done), but rather for each person to do what they are good at, meaning, to specialize each person in their role. Just like in a soccer team, each player has a position, and they are experts in it (not everyone knows how to score goals or how to defend). That's how I ended up discovering that the team member who did less work than his colleagues was capable of doing other tasks better than any of them. And not only that, but I also realized that the team was more productive if each member focused on their strengths.

Teamwork. This time last year we had an expensively assembled team. But. It was badly led with no direction, no clear goals and everyone pulling in different directions with their own agendas. It was destined to fail. This year is different. A unified team working together and well led. The whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Whatever the result at Wembley it won't be failure, it will be a step towards the goal, because failure can't occur when the goal is clear. The similarities in sport and business are clear. Does your team understand it's purpose? Is your team well led and working towards a shared goal, clearly understood by everyone?

Overdue picture from a recent onsite team meeting we had, coupled with three takeaways: 1. Find the time to get your team together in-person. The ideation and conversation that happens outside of a video call is invaluable. 2. It’s so important to set time aside for strategy. We all move so fast, and leveraging a talented team’s “group think” mentality gives you so many great ideas to improve current state. 3. Never, ever agree to a team building activity that you are terrible at. Who from New England prefers big ball bowling? Apparently, everyone but me.

In just under two months, we’ll be gathering together at the Permission Slip Conference, and I’ll be sharing a new keynote that I’m absolutely JAZZED about… along with emceeing the conference, hosting it, and along with an incredibly awesome team of people, I’m generally responsible for the awesomeness of the experience.  NBD... Ok, you’re right - there is plenty of cause for me to be freaking out a bit…But instead - I’m going to focus on how I prep for big-deal moments like this.  First - focus on the story you’re telling yourself: Instead of “I’ve never done anything quite like this before” (which is somewhat true) - I’m saying, “I have all the skills to do this incredibly well. I have everything I need. I belong on this stage, and in this moment.”  Then you can focus on the story you’re telling others. This is the content and delivery preparation piece.
