DON’T MIND THE GAP, FIND THE GAP
The Music Channel business was hard.
The entire Music Channel category barely squeaked out 2% of total TV viewership.
So, the entire sales pitch was contingent on smoke and mirrors.
But to grow that way and drive-up sales, airtime rates was very tough.
When I jumped into the Programming hot seat, I saw an opportunity where others saw static.
The prime-time game [7pm to 11pm] was a battleground, and we were outgunned.
So, we took the fight to sleep mornings, where competition was napping.
Or barely sipping its coffee.
HERE’S HOW
- Morning shift: We turned our gaze to the early hours when folks were getting ready for college, work. Perfect time for some visual radio!
- Same old playlist, different day: Everyone had the same songs playing… not a ratings bonanza. So, we started introducing one random new track every morning. Beyond Bollywood [Think Apdi Podey, Prabhudeva, or even K-Pop]
- Breaking breaks: Did the unthinkable – no ad breaks for 2 whole hours. [We just spread out the inventory to other slots]
- Short-form content magic: Sprinkled in under 1-min videos of Humor, Health Tips, Horoscopes [reels before they were a thing!]
- Desync ad breaks: While other channels took their synchronised ad breaks, we tweaked our slots so we had music playing when they were showing ads
THE RESULT?
The morning ratings spike made our overall average channel ratings look like they were on steroids.
We drove up ratings, ad rates and grabbed a substantially larger market share [both viewership and revenue!]
Sometimes, being different is better than being better.
Sometimes, it’s easier to fight where there’s no competition.
Sometimes, it’s great to go after what no one else wants… yet!
Sometimes, focusing on a small area and owning it beats spreading yourself thin.
