Thrilled to see my friend and amazing coach and human Gary Ware on this list! If you're not familiar with Gary's work, two great starting places are his TED Talk, How Play Saved My Life, and his book Playful Rebellion: Maximize Workplace Success through the Power of Play. As I get older and my kids are teenagers, I appreciate his challenge to rethink the power of play in our personal and professional lives. Come on, let's play!

Culture is core to what we're doing at Edison. Not the squishy "culture" that's represented by abstract words on the wall and superficial material things, but building a people-first organization in which we can make the positive impact we seek to make on our people, our partners and customer, our community, and society as a whole. It's been a treat to take dedicated time to explore this topic in detail at the Culture Forum this week. Unlike other culture-focused events I've seen, this one isn't a sales pitch to show why culture is important. I, along with other attendees, already believe that. This event is focused on the details - how do you actually operationalize core values, and build an organization that truly lives out your values, mission, and vision. There's nothing soft here. It takes tactical, real-world actions to make an aspirational culture a reality. Thank you Stan Sewitch and others for putting on such a great event. Day 1 yesterday was incredible, and I can't wait to kick off Day 2 in a few hours.

Brands that harness the power of popular culture create an enduring and disproportionate competitive advantage incl. a larger share of voice, increased sales, unlock new audiences, benefit from greater price elasticity, and find themselves both protecting and expanding their market share. Those that don’t will fall behind. Very exciting news from the Common Interest community today as we launch CultureLab; a new technology company, led buy the brilliant Jed Hallam, that helps organisations and CMOs unlock that power. The cultural intelligence platform is built on proprietary AI-driven technology that analyses more than 1.8 billion cultural data points every single day in order to find the signals amid the noise that matter to your brand. You can find more about the launch below (link in comments) 👇 Join the waiting list at culturelab.co ✨
Many of you know this already, but I have been obsessed with culture for a very long time. It’s not only a professional obsession, but a deeply personal one too. Exploring and finding where I belong in culture has given me the keys to a life I never thought I could have. A belief in the power of culture is what drove me to set up Love Will Save The Day (and latterly co-found LWSTD-FM), and to co-found Common People. It has been an enduring belief that has driven my professional life; to help brands create value for culture and, in turn, harness its awesome power. So when I met Anthony Freedman last year (thank you, Neil Barrie for the introduction) and he told me about his vision for Common Interest, I knew this was a team and company that I had to be a part of. And so today, I’m excited to share the launch of Common Interest’s first start-up; CultureLab, a new technology company that I’ll be leading, that’s built to help brands and businesses unlock the power of popular culture. Anthony and I spoke to Campaign UK (thank you, Lucy Shelley!) about why we’ve created CultureLab, how it’s crucial to the Common Interest vision, and how our products and services will help CMOs build the business case for their brands harnessing the power of popular culture. Link, as they say, in the comments

This morning we hosted our third Coolr Session: "Unconscious Bullsh*t: It's Time To Break The Barriers In Creativity." Thanks to our panelists Ayo Ogunde, Mesha Moinirad, Jack Hyslop & Jessica Jones for joining us. Find our key takeaways below. 👀 ➡ The importance of lived experience. 👫 🔸 Nothing can beat the actual lived experience of someone from a marginalised group. If looking to target a community, make sure to include insight from people who have had first-hand experience and play a part within these communities. ➡ Brands need authenticity. 🌈 ⬛ ❌ 🔹 Everyone wants to be doing DE&I the right way. Honesty is key and so is being authentic, but it needs to come from a genuine place. Brands doing rainbows and black square simply isn’t enough anymore and lacks any genuine intent, but who is in the room to tell you otherwise? It’s important to recognise when diversity is not represented in your sounding board. ➡ Diversity in leadership. 🌍 🔸 Leadership needs diversity. People from marginalised groups need to see themselves in senior roles. If your team isn’t diverse, ask yourself why? and as a bare minimum, do you have allies within your team? It’s up to companies to lead the change but this can’t happen overnight. Create mentorships, a DE&I focused committee, and schemes to build up diverse talent from the inside out. ➡ Compassion in the workplace is key. ❤️ 🔹 Creating a safe space for people to ask for what they need is vital with regards to creating an inclusive workplace. Not everyone has the same way of working and understanding this will allow companies to get the best out of their people. ▶ To summarise, there isn’t a one size fits all approach to DE&I. One person’s experience can be vastly different to another, however small changes can create big impact to help individuals feel seen and heard within the creative world.

Creating visible & measurable change by truly embracing a company's culture | Defining | Activating | Measuring | Living
Visible Actions ... aren't all actions visible? One of our clients needed to start activating its culture around the globe. When piloting the approach to come up with actions that matched their aspired culture, we noticed that what they came up with were actually not going to work. Like: "we need to start listening to each other more", "we need to communicate more", "we need to share information better". Long lists of them without anything tangible, and no priorities of any kind. Now, all the actions were borne our of a real desire to change how things were going, but formulated this way, none of them were going to make a difference, ever. They lacked a couple of things that made them really actionable. So, we came up with a Visible Actions workshop to counter these shortcomings. Actions had to be concrete, easy to implement, creating a high impact at a (relatively) low cost. And the workshops themselves had to be visible to the rest of the workforce, so that cascading them would be easier down the line. Have a look at the slider for more info, and let me know how you activate your company's culture. #VisibleActions #ActivatingCulture #CompanyCulture #CultureDevelopment #InspiringPeople
