Following a small gain in April, the U.S. CPRI retreated in May, down 0.2%. The U.S. CPRI measures chemical production trends on a three-month moving average (3MMA) to smooth month-to-month volatility. Chemical production eased across all regions in May. The largest declines were in the Gulf Coast, Ohio Valley, and Southeast regions. Compared to a year ago, the U.S. CPRI was down 0.9%.

ACC's U.S. Chemical Production Regional Index (U.S. CPRI) rose 0.4% in February, following a 0.1% decline in January. Output rose across all regions, reflecting in part a rebound from January’s freeze that disrupted output especially in the Gulf Coast region. Compared to last February, output was 2.0% higher, with Y/Y gains in all regions (except the Northeast).

The U.S. Chemical Production Regional Index (CPRI) eased in January (lower by 0.1%). Output declined in the Gulf Coast and Southeast regions, reflecting in part, the freeze event that disrupted production. Output in the Mid-Atlantic and West Coast regions was slightly higher, while output was flat in the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Northeast regions. Compared to last January, output was 2.3% higher, with Y/Y gains in all regions (except the Northeast).

Chemicals sector - 1QCY24 EU27 chemical prod. up 0.6% YoY; positive yet lacks momentum We have been following CEFIC since past few quarters to assess the EU27 chemicals environment. After several months of decline impacted by Russia-Ukraine war issue, EU27 MoM chemical production inched up first time in Aug and Sep 2023. Yet, recovery remained ambiguous as uptick was lumpy thereafter. Latest CEFIC latest data suggests, during 1Q2024, EU chemical production rose 0.6% YoY and 1.2% QoQ with Germany being one of the driving forces witnessing 5.4% YoY growth in 1Q. Nonetheless, CEFIC still remains skeptical and commented, “The slight increase in chemical volumes throughout the first three months of 2024 (+0.6%, y-o-y) must be analysed with a lot of caution, it could be linked to a short-term restocking. It must not be perceived as good start of stabilised demand and ongoing recovery. There are still no solid signs of a sustained recovery in demand for chemical products.” Although, a positive data point, we too remain cautious on any significant recovery in near term. 

Following a downwardly revised 0.3% decline in September, ACC’s U.S. Chemical Production Regional Index (CPRI) rose 0.1% in October. Chemical production remained lower by 0.7% compared to a year ago. In October, the trend in chemical production was essentially flat to modestly higher in all regions.

The chemical market industry trends are experiencing some fluctuations. While earlier forecasts predicted a significant uptick in the chemical industry in the near future, industry experts are now acknowledging the potential challenges this year may bring for the sector.
