#StrategicInnovations🔍 Insight
To our esteemed Somras Ventures network,
Innovation is a double-edged sword, as we discern today by revisiting a pivotal moment in the American Civil War.
The emergence of the "Minie ball" wasn't just a technological advancement, but a game-changer, redefining the paradigms of warfare with its enhanced precision and devastating impact.
In the venture landscape, such disruptive innovations echo the transformative power of the "Minie ball." While the contexts differ, the principles remain: the smallest shifts can herald monumental changes, and the ripple effects of innovation can be both constructive and challenging.
As we unwind into the weekend, I invite you, as Managing Partner, to reflect upon how our investment decisions today can catalyze tomorrow's innovations, sculpting the future in ways we may yet imagine.
Tune in every Friday as we traverse history, drawing lessons and parallels for our ever-evolving journey in the venture world.

🔍 #FridayHistory Insights
Attention history enthusiasts! Today, we dive into a technological evolution during the American Civil War.
The introduction of the "Minie ball" marked a significant change in warfare. Unlike its predecessors, this bullet boasted superior accuracy and inflicted far more grievous wounds.
Such advancements, while seeming incremental, can drastically shift the nature of conflicts and have profound consequences on the battlefield.
As we head into the weekend, it's worth pondering how innovation, for better or worse, continuously shapes our human story.
Join us every Friday for more glimpses into history's rich tapestry. Through understanding, we gain perspective.

#laws of business
Issac Newton -third law of physics. Whenever objects A and B interact with each other, they exert forces upon each other. For every action, there is a reaction
When a naval gun from the 1800's is fired there is a recoil of the canon. But the recoil is controlled by ropes and pullies.
"Mind the gap" - the gap is the time and the space from the action to the final resting place of the reaction - the #recoil.
For every action in business, there is a reaction. Not only with the client but also within the business. The #process of #production and the #progress of the business.
The greater the #pressure of a business to succeed the greater the reaction within the business.
"Mind the gap" As pressure increases the deviation to ignore important steps in the process becomes normalized. This is where errors wastage occur in a business sinking and losing valuable revenue at every step
The application of the Laws of Thermodynamics occurs. The greater the heat the greater the pressure over time leading to chaos
Thus "mind the gap" to reduce the probability of normalization of deviation of the processes within the business to increase the well-being of the business and the people in the business and customers' businesses.

Something on my bucket list:
I want to create a Youtube video series on teaching diplomacy using only examples from primates!
Last week, I taught a class on security communities and their diplomatic practices. I asked students if chimpanzees could form security communities.
Then, right after the class, a huge coincidence (or maybe those social media algorithms at work!) happened.
I came across the clip below, where a leopard attacks a baboon, and other baboons come to help their friend and scare off the leopard.
Today, I showed my students this clip, and we discussed the difference between a security community and a security alliance again, this time with a visual!
Baboons, and other primates, exhibit many traits of security communities:
- a society built on shared values,
- dependable expectations,
- (limited) cooperative security: one for all, all for one,
- socialization of security practices.
But they are missing the most important characteristic of security communities:
- ruling out violence as a way to settle disputes!
The same baboons who saved their fellow member from the leopard can fight each other for various reasons (though they tend to reconcile later: https://lnkd.in/geW_BTaG).
Members of security communities resolve their disputes peacefully, to the extent that violence is not even considered an option.
Peace becomes an unreflexive and common-sense practice (i.e., logic of practicality https://lnkd.in/grPevAN3).
So, for now (until I find convincing evidence from primate research), my conclusion is that primates can build very effective security alliances (also security regimes and cooperative security), but they fall short of forming security communities.
