Why is it vital to include occupational therapy in mental health treatment? Talk therapy is an amazing intervention in the retraining and malleability of neural circuits within our brains; AND still, as any teacher who has studied pedagogy can tell you, we NEED hands'-on for learning!!! I'm reminded of all of the 'hard' science courses I took in school: there was ALWAYS a lecture AND a lab. Talk therapy is much the same as a talk (lecture) given by an instructor, guiding a client through emotional thought patterns. As a "doing" therapist, I talk very little... rather, I scaffold through application. Our nervous systems are eternally dynamic, and though a patient may understand concepts on a symbolic level when spoken to about said topic, when patients begin trying to apply in the physical world, they will come up with stumbling blocks again and again. If a "doing" therapist isn't present to help guide them through the application process, they will struggle and lose self-efficacy, and slow their progress and healing. Remember what therapeutics are: they are modalities of treatment. Pharmacological therapeutics are often combined with other pharmacological therapeutics and various therapies to get the optimal wrap-around dosage that a patient requires as an individual. More than 1 modality is often appropriate. Now, you might say it is similar to the ripple edit tool; yeah, it is, but instead of moving the other clips along, it only moves the clip involved in the trim, leaving an empty space.
